Brachiosaurus (Jurassic Park by Dakin)

It’s a shame that despite four movies spanning the last 25 years we’ve never gotten a good sauropod toy in conjunction with the “Jurassic Park” franchise. No doubt this is because it would have to be an enormous toy, especially if it were in scale with the various Kenner Tyrannosaurus toys released over the years. For the original “Jurassic Park” we got a baby Brachiosaurus released with one of the action figures, a decent die cast figurine, and this thing.

The Dakin Brachiosaurus is a crudely made, awkward looking toy. For those of us old enough to have had these as children there might be some nostalgic value but it’s otherwise unremarkable. The sunken eyes, shrink wrapped skull, and shallow chest are a far cry from the beautifully rendered animals in the original “Jurassic Park”. But that’s the Dakin line for you. You don’t collect them for accuracy, if anything their odd appearance is their appeal.

Other toys in the line redeem their ugliness with bold coloration and a dose of personality in their strange appearance. I can’t really say the same for this one, which in my opinion is the weakest of the 6 toys. The head (or skull, I should say) has a reptilian, retro charm but there isn’t really much else to say about it. The body is a dark blue-gray and generally lacking in fine detail. The skin is smooth with some wrinkles along the neck. The feet are the elephantine feet you would expect on a toy of this age.

I can honestly only recommend this toy for the serious “Jurassic Park” completest and fans of bizarre looking dinosaur toys. Obviously if you want to complete the Dakin collection you’ll need it. And at least it doesn’t take up a lot of space. Next up for review will be another old toy sauropod and since my next review will be #100 you can rest assured it will be a better toy than this one.
