With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom just around the corner, I’m sure a lot of us are feeling the JP hype and nostalgia again pretty strongly. Today I’d like to take a look back at one of the finest toys from the Lost World line of toys: the electronic Velociraptor!

This is one of my childhood toys, and man, was it a favorite. The color scheme is simple, but attractive: this guy has a base golden tan color with dark brown stripes and a creamy underbelly. This is pretty accurate to how they appeared in the film. The sculpt is pretty nicely detailed, with lots of scales and wrinkles. The uniform length of the teeth is a bit strange though, and almost gives it a “dino dentures” type look, but it’s not too distracting. Of the classic Kenner raptors, only the giant electronic Utahraptor beats it in size. At about 11.75″ (30cm) long and 6″ (15cm) tall, it towers over human figures from the line, and looks rather menacing. For a kid, it’s easy to make this the “leader of the pack” during playtime.

I don’t think scientific accuracy is really worth mentioning here: we all know this is a toy based on the film, so of course, it’s scaly, has pronated wrists, and so on and so forth. In terms of screen accuracy, I think it really excels. In particular, the head sculpt is much closer to what we see in the movies when compared to the raptors from the original JP Kenner line. As already stated, the color scheme is pretty spot on as well. If there’s any real drawback here, it’s that the belly is extra large in order to house the voice box and electronics. Also, it can be a little tricky getting it to stand on its own; it’s much more stable if you use its hands or tail as a prop.

Looks aside, what really makes this toy shine is the action feature. Pulling back the right leg causes the neck to stretch forward and the jaws to give a satisfying snap. This is accompanied by a screen accurate raptor call, followed by a snarl. It just works so well together, and is a lot of fun. Additionally, the arms and legs are articulated at the joints, and can swivel for added poseability (with the exception of the right leg, which moves exclusively to activate the snapping feature).

If you’re a fan of the Jurassic Park series, I highly recommend this figure. It’s one of my absolute favorite toys to be released for the JP franchise, and still looks pretty great displayed, or stalking unsuspecting human figures in the long grass.

  • I much prefer the color scheme on this one to the Mattel Legacy raptor, but that’s because this one is much more film accurate (in regards to the color scheme and stripes) of course. Definitely one of the best JP raptor toys out there too, although a bit on the big side. Good review too.

    • The bright orange arms on the Legacy raptor kind of bother me, it makes the toy look unfinished. I think this is my favorite paint scheme for the existing JP raptors 🙂 And thanks!

  • It’s pitiful by today’s scientific standards, but it was a terrific toy for its time. And far superior to Hasbro’s dreck.
