With the recent news of PNSO coming back from the dead, I figured it was time to review their Triceratops ‘Doyle’ model. This beauty was sculpted by the incredible Zhao Chuang. Doyle is meant to be a complementary piece to their Tyrannosaurus Wilson model. It comes in a nice collector’s box, with the figure and base packed very tight into the foam inserts. Also comes with a postcard with the most terrifying Triceratops artwork ever.

Doyle is 1/35 scale, which is much smaller that most of what PNSO offers currently. He’s 10 inches long and 4 1/2 inches tall, and made of solid PVC (compared to the hollow vinyl of larger models). He comes with a nice, very detailed display base. There’s a stump, a few scattered rocks, some broken branches, and a generous helping of moss. The moss, stump, and branches are beautifully painted. The rocks aren’t painted as nicely, though. They have a very plastic look to them which is distracting compared the other well-painted parts. I would love to see this done in polystone (the Vitae Giganotosaurus base really spoiled me). Also on the base are two footprints to mount the model on. There’s a large peg for the hind foot to plug into. Doyle fits very snugly into his prints.

Moving on to the model itself, I have to say this is one of the best Triceratops out there. Doyle is sculpted in a running pose. Looks like he’s just trotting along and showing off for some ladies. The main color scheme is tan and brown. There’s a couple splotches of green on the hips and sides of the face. The back has a nice water ripple pattern of a darker brown. The eyes are devil red with black eye sockets (just like on Wilson). The frill is highlighted with reds and whites. Has the false eyes display going on too.

Doyle’s jaw is articulated. Opening it reveals a beautifully painted mouth. The teeth are all painted perfectly. I’m not a fan of articulation on herbivores, but it’s done very well here. Wish there was a wet sheen, but that’s just me nitpicking.

As far as accuracy goes, Doyle is very good. The scales seem to be sculpted using the Lane specimen skin impressions (similar to what Doug Watson used on his superb Triceratops). The neck is thick and powerful-looking. Almost all the toes have the correct amount of claws. I say ‘almost’ because the right front foot has a claw on one of the digits that shouldn’t be there. It isn’t noticeable unless you’re looking really closely. Doyle has a row of quills that start at the hips and end at the middle of the tail. There is no evidence that triceratops had quills. The quills aren’t as over the top like CollectA’s ceratopsians.

So in closing, this is a fantastic model by PNSO. I got mine off eBay shortly after it was released. I checked today and there’s only a few on there now with much higher prices that what I paid. EverythingDinosaur.com still has it in stock at a much more affordable price. PNSO has said that they will start producing models again by the end of the year, so hopefully this great model will become easier to find.

  • Doyle is a terrific figure. He’s advertised at 1/35, but not’s not likely IMO. Doug Watson’s Safari trike is listed at /35, which is credible, given Watson’s precision. I’d put Dole at closer to 1/32, very similar to Safari’s Great Dinosaurs Triceratops.

  • The only thing you can quibble about with “Doyle” is the color scheme. It could have been brighter, especially on the head. Otherwise it is THE finest mass-produced Triceratops figure out there. And there is a lot of competition as Triceratops is probably the second most popular dinosaur species produced in figure form, after TRex. Imbued by Cheng (the sculptor) with that prancing life-likeness that he imbues all of his quadrapedal dinosaurs with …

  • I’ve added an image of the postcard art.

    • Thank you. And come on that triceratops artwork is nightmare fuel lol. I’m not knocking it. I think it’s pretty cool and unique.

  • Finally this figure get reviewed. The paint is dull, not as colorful as promotional images but I think this is my best Triceratops figure.
And no, there’s no ‘most terrifying’ artwork, it just a card with Triceratops Doyle and T rex Wilson images on one side and Triceratops skull narrated in Chinese and comparison with bus on the other side. I even forget about this card and had to open my box again in hope finding some artwork.

  • You mention a postcard with the most terrifying Triceratops artwork ever, then you don’t show it.

  • The triceratops PNSO is perhaps the second triceratops figure since my honest and humble best opinion that has been made in the toy market.

The first toy triceratops figure that I like the most is that of Doug Watson 2018, then the triceratops of PNSO and closely followed the triceratops of Battat. The fourth triceratops figure is disputed by Schleich triceratops 2018 and Kaiyodo’s triceratops of Kaiyodo’s capsule.

Honestly is perhaps one of the best represented herbivores in the toy market by far. I certainly hope that other companies such as Collecta will one day surprise us with another magnificent figure of this ceraptosio that is an icon of the herbivorous dinosaurs for most of the people among whom I find myself. .
