Gigantoraptor (Dino Expo series 3 by Capcom)

Back in 2016, I posted my first blog on the Dinosaur Toy Blog, Papo’s Woolly Rhino. Now, two and a half years later, I have hit a big mile stone, my 50^th review. For big events like this, reviewers either go for a nostalgic piece from their collection, something big or something rare and pretty. My review will be the latter.

As part of their 2009 Dino expo, Capcom released a  figure of the giant caenagnathid, Gigantoraptor. Hailing from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia, 85-70 MYA, this was the largest oviraptorosaurian ever found, and would have been a contemporary of other giant herbivorous theropods, such as Therizinosaurus and Deinocheirus. There are very few figures of this titan available, so let’s see what Capcom can do with it.

This figure is 5” long and 3.4” from base to crest, making it a good scale with the Collecta figure (kind of look like a male and female when together). The figure is beautifully detailed and textured, with overall sandy colours, perfect for a desert animal. The few bits of colour, such as the blue lower beak and the browns on the tail plume work well, along with the colouration of the nails and beak. The pose is great, striding out majestically, while stretching out to full height. The figure has a base to help it balance, which helps prevent huge feet or tripod stance.

Accuracy, from what is known of the species, seems pretty good. The long legs and short metacarpals are there, with a correct lower jaw and tail. It is an appropriately slim figure, perfect for a nimble animal. The skull and feathers are based on other oviraptors that are more complete and seem pretty accurate overall. My only real gripe with the figure is that the arms seem a little short compared to the actual animal, but that is a very small complaint on an otherwise great figure.

This is an amazing figure of a rarely made species, and highly recommended if you can find it. That is the trickiest part though, as they are pretty rare and expensive when they do appear. To get it, eBay is your best option, as it rarely appears elsewhere. This is definitely a collector piece more than a kids toy, but one many, as I do, will appreciate.
