Protoceratops (Lindberg/Pyro)

While some fossil species in the world are rare, known from mere fragments, others are known from multiple specimens. Such is the case with Protoceratops, an early Ceratopsian, so common that it is known as the sheep of the Cretaceous, with multiple species associated with the genus. As a result, there are several figures made of it, and even a model kit, originally by Pyro, then re-released by Lindberg. Let’s take a look.

Once taken from the sprues, cleaned, glued and had gaps filled, the end result is a very large figure, measuring 8.4″ long, 3.5″ high and 3″ wide, not likely going to fit in well with most lines. It’s pose is as if looking out, perhaps over it’s herd or eggs, giving it a fairly retro stance.

As mentioned earlier, this is a pretty retro feeling model, resulting in an overly pudgy Protoceratops with monster movie style teeth, the major inaccuracy of the model. Most the rest is spot on.

With that said, the fun part is painting. I actually brought this figure pre-painted in a bulk lot on eBay, which results in the all over green you see so far (makes it look like an Invicta figure). As you can see from the previous photo, the colour for the Pyro model is purple, while the Lindberg edition is in a grey plastic. I decided to give it a bit more flair, so painted as you see below, based off TrefRex’s version of the Walking With Dinosaurs version, as I wanted to keep the green painting, as it was well done.

This is a very retro model, but it is quite charming, so I do recommend it, being a great project to paint how you will. The Lindberg model is very easy and cheap to find on eBay, while the Pyro has become vintage and pricey. Either way, this is a fun one, maybe more for children then collectors, but good all the same.
