Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis - first time resin casting
« on: April 09, 2014, 08:44:27 PM »
Hello there!
Since I got back into dinosaur sculpting lately (and finished a Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis 1:20 model two weeks ago), I finally got my first shipment of smooth-cast resin today. It is really hard to get any proper materials here in Austria, so everything takes a while to order from Germany or the US.
Since I have never made a silicone mold (or a resin cast, for that matter) before, there have been some complications with air bubbles being trapped in the resin. I have patched up the first cast (which resulted in a shorter tail than the original model due to a large cavity right in the middle) with two-part-epoxy putty, sadly it has only been available in dark grey at the local store.

Enough of the talking, have some pictures! I would love to receive some feedback, as I am about to start working on a 1:20 Albertosaurus sarcophagus sculpture (which was intended to be a counterpart for this one) and I definitely have a lot to learn about proper dinosaur sculpting.

And here is the current status of the 1:20 Albertosaurus:

I hope you like them!

Greetings,
Fabrizio

Should you ever plan to make another such model and sell it, let me know how much you want for one! I love the sculpt, itīs unusual, brawny, yet plausible.

I am definitely selling them, you can just send me a private message about it! The two miscast ones are (sort of) available as well, for a much reduced price that is. If no one is interested in them, though, I will patch up both of them and start painting soon.

Wonderful sculpt. I especially like the choice in species  ;) The texturing is nice also.

Great sculpt, spot on proportions,
you are making sure your mold has enough chimneys to allow air to escape in all the low points?

Very nicely done, I'm reminded of the early Kaiyodo vinyl kits for some reason..they had a certain style that was quite appealing !

Thanks everyone!

I tried to add as many chimneys as possible, but it seems that some of them did not quite work while casting. I definitely need to alter the mold a bit for the next cast, since the problem areas seemed to have been the same twice in a row. That and some more waiting to do. Good casting materials are hard to come by here.

I had purchased one Pachyrhinosaurus. I had it repainted and here it is:

Edit:
I just noticed how senseless this posting was since the pictures of the original models are all gone due to the photobucket thing. So one has no comparison. And I just noticed I do not know yet how to delete postings...My eigth or ninth year here and I never deleted anything?!
