Visiting Zürich / Switzerland

I've just been to Zürich / Switzerland (the town my mother was born) for a few days and took pics of everything palaeontology related I could find :).

Day 1: The Aathal Museum; Day 2: 'World of Dinosaurs' in Männedorf; Day 3: The Zoologic Museum of the University Zürich

So let's get started!

Aathal Museum  Part 1

In front of the museum, which looks pretty small from the outside (a delusion!) there's a Stegosaurus - pretty nice sculpt, reminds me a bit of the Wild Safari figure :).

Right after you've passed the entrance, you're standing in the middle of the museum shop that offers a nice bunch of figures from Carnegie to Favorite, but way overpriced.
The shop is surrounded by a Diplodocus skeleton sculpt made after some TV creature.

Let's go to the 'Dinosaurs of Europe' room first:

Two models by the door: Scelidosaurus from England & Juravenator from Germany

Torvosaurus skull, Europasaurus holgeri & Tethyshadros insularis "Antonio"

Miragaia longicollum

Rhabdodon priscus & Neovenator salerii

Iguanodon bernissartensis

Plateosaurus

Something for the retro lovers:
Old sculpts of Megalosaurus & Iguanodon

....... and the very first European theropod find: a fragment of a Megalosaurus' mandibula

Himmapaan

Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing. I just love that Tethyshadros.

Gryphoceratops

What an awesome museum!  Some of those skeletal mounts bust be relatively new right?

amargasaurus cazaui

Some amazing dinosaurs there, thanks so much for sharing them !!!
Authors with varying competence have suggested dinosaurs disappeared because of meteorites...God's will, raids by little green hunters in flying saucers, lack of standing room in Noah's Ark, and palaeoweltschmerz—Glenn Jepsen

Jetoar

Amazing museum. I like all skeletons oh this museum  ^-^.
[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

 :) Thanks for the comments!
It is an amazing museum and it has improved since I was there some years ago.
I talked to the lady who works at the shop and she said that it's all privately financed. You probably can only find that in Switzerland :-\.

Aathal Museum  Part 2

A corridor with Dinosaur skulls:

Allosaurus "Big AL Two"

Diplodocus "H.Q. Zwei"

Camptosaurus "Arky"

Stegosaurus "Victoria"

Stegosaurus "Moritz"

Apatosaurus "Max"

Camarasaurus "E.T."

Having a look outside, there's a Jurassic Park atmosphere at the children's playground :).

Will the bloodthirsty beast devour the little girls :o?

Aathal Museum  Part 3

A sauropod baby of the diplodocid family about 6 months old and 1.7 m long.
They named him "Toni" - he's really cute :D!

Entering the 'Howe ranch' room:

This Diplodocus was too large in that room - impossible for me to take a pic of its full length.

Allosaurus "Big AL Two" way up on the wall

Othnielia "Barbara"

Diplodocus "H.Q. Eins"

Cirex

Cool pictures, I see they changed the exposition in the room above the entry / shop, I might go again for another visit next time we have a bad weather weekend...
Waitng for the rest of your pictures...
I am sure there is a lot more to come, seeing that there is quite a few rooms not yet covered here...  ;D

martin garratt

Wonderful photos; looks like a good museum.

Himmapaan

Oh, my gosh...  :o Mega drool at these latest pictures!

;D he, he, you're right of course ....... but in the meantime by way of variation .......

World of Dinosaurs  Part 1

Not far from Zürich city, still by the Zürich lake in Männedorf, after a good walk uphill they had some life-sized prehistoric models built up on the alp. I've seen lots of white goats on my way up and could even listen to some alphorns - or was I only dreaming? Not the typical Dinosaur environment ;D.

Aathal Museum  Part 4

Entering the 'Feathered Dinosaurs' room:

Diatryma (not a Dinosaur, but feathered)

Archaeopteryx

Velociraptor

Microraptor

Sinosauropteryx

Caudipteryx

ZoPteryx

Wow!  Those feathered dinosaur models are spectacular! :o :o

And I really like that Kentrosaurus statue too. :)

Himmapaan

:o :o :o These may be the best feathered dinosaur models I've seen!

(Diatryma is a dinosaur, Helge, surely?  ;D)

CityRaptor

Pretty good looking.

Looks like the models at "World of Dinosaurs" are also made by Wolters Design, who made the ones at Münchehagen. Indeed some of them even have the same paintjob. As for the "Dimetrodon", that is actually Edaphosaurus.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

I do agree! I instantly fell in love with Archaeopteryx & Microraptor :).

I was thinking the same looking at the sail from far away, but the skull looks rather 'dimetrodonian' to me :-\.

World of Dinosaurs  Part 2

Diplodocus with infants

Stegosaurus with infant

Euoplocephalus

Centrosaurus

Allosaurus

CityRaptor

Well, that is the Edaphosaurus in Münchehagen:

The model seems to be newer ( one of several to be newer, same for the infant Diplodocus ) than the one in Switzerland, but the skull is very similar.  Both are also "smiling", while the Wolter Dimetrodons generally are protrayed with open mouths.

Nice one :)! Looks a bit more like Edaphosaurus. On the Zürich model the snout is far too long for an Edapho. It's a mixture of both species ;D.

Aathal Museum  Part 5

large Theropod skulls:

Allosaurus

Ceratosaurus

Carnotaurus

Monolophosaurus

Tyrannosaurus

T. rex "Stan"

Tarbosaurus

The biggest hand in the world :)

Tylosaurus, Archelon & Elasmosaurus
