Hyneria (Paleo-Creatures)

Ancient fish, with the exception of sharks, are a rarity in toy lines. Perhaps most believe they are all small and aren’t noteworthy. This is far from the case, as many ancient fish were large and bizarre enough to contend with dinosaurs. Fortunately, our own Jetoar has been able to prove they are worth making with figures like this: Hyneria, a Devonian Sarcopterygian from Pennsylvania, a 12 ft fish that would have terrorised all creatures smaller than it.

I want to start with the base this time, something included with many Paleo-creatures. This has the perfect look of a lake or river bed, complete with several aquatic plants and stone. plus holes to place a stand for Hyneria itself, to make it look like it’s swimming. A great effect, though I can rarely get it to balance properly. Looks great when it does though.

To the figure itself! This is a gorgeous little figure, well sculpted all round. The mix of greyins greens and greys give it a very natural colour scheme, befitting an ambush predator that may wait in weeds, with reddish brown fins working brilliantly. This figure is in a 1:35 scale, measuring 3.8″ long and 1.2″ high, so will fit into any line that uses this scale. The pose fits with the base, looking as if it is swimming along, perhaps preparing to ambush prey with a swift burst from it’s tail. Looks great!

With fact card provided.

Now to accuracy. This figure gets across the major details brilliantly, from it’s scales to it’s multiple powerful fins. The length of the body looks right, along with it’s big, mighty head. Perfect all round!

This is an outstanding little figure, certain to be valued among any collection. They take time to make, but the quality speaks for itself. I highly recommend this figure. Grab it where you can (Dan’s dinosaurs or sites like that do better, as Paleo creatures rarely appear on eBay).
