Concavenator (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Hammond Collection by Mattel)
…s. It is displayed in one of the museum dioramas at the Lockwood Estate in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Concavenator was a carcharodontosaurid that lived in Spain during the early Cretaceous period. It’s only known from a single well preserved and mostly complete specimen. It was described in 2010 and has achieved a fair degree of popularity since then. Several figures of Concavenator exist, including those by Safari in their Carnegie and Wild…
Concavenator (Papo)
…a Papo. Yes, it is very obviously Concavenator, and it is trying to be the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Concavenator, but it even fails at that. The details are uneven, the paint and wash is different and applied in a sloppier than usual way, and the sculpt itself is sloppy, and horrible. It is deformed. At least the jaw opens and closes. I can’t really say what it is about the details that bothers me. It is just ugly. It does not know whether it…
Concavenator (Jurassic World Dino Rivals, Dual Attack, by Mattel)
…new species and one of these is the Spanish hump-backed theropod known as Concavenator. Concavenator corcovatus is not a new species on the dinosaur toy market, however, it is a new species for a Jurassic Park toy line. The animal grew up to six meters long, making it a smaller member of its family which includes the likes of Giganotosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and Mapusaurus (to name just a few). The thing that makes Concavenator stand out from…
Concavenator (Jurassic Hunters by Geoworld)
…h I admit, is pretty cringeworthy to me now) which just so happens to be a Concavenator. This Concavenator is of your typical Geoworld quality, meaning its accuracy is minimal. It is clear that the model looks like a dinosaur, but it does not really have the care put into it to be worthy of purchase. The first thing that’s wrong with this figure is the total lack of muscle in most areas of the body. Basically, the model is very shrink-wrapped al…
Concavenator (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)
…ending that these are scars left from a muscular attachment. In the end, both ideas require further evidence. The sculptor, Doug Watson, has decidedly gone with the latter idea, leaving the arms bare of quills. Comparison with the Favorite Concavenator, which features a hump and quills on the arms. Overall, the Wild Safari Concavenator turned out to be much nicer than expected. Other than my copy’s warped feet causing it to tip over a little too e…
Metriacanthosaurus (Jurassic Park Hammond Collection by Mattel)
…upon release. And technically, two of those dinosaurs are film canon. The Concavenator appears as a taxidermy mount in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the Metriacanthosaurus appeared in Jurassic Park, it was just in name only, the genus name written on one of the embryo vials that Nedry steals. Metriacanthosaurus has been lurking in the background of the Jurassic Park franchise since the start. It was again acknowledged in Jurassic World, not…
Ankylosaurus (Jurassic Park: Hammond Collection by Mattel)
…of the older releases is that the logo denoting it was released during the Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary, and represents a particular species from the original trilogy. For instance, the Concavenator, its wave mate, lacks that logo on its packaging. The box measures about 10 inches/25.4 cm long, 7 inches/17.78 cm tall, and 3 inches/7.62 cm wide, making it the same size as any medium Hammond Collection box. The figure comes within a plastic tray a…
Jurassic World Dominion Minis part 2 (Jurassic World by Mattel)
…ong, but I appreciate that it is correct, beak and all, plus feathers on a Jurassic World model is a miracle. The hands even avoid pronation, if a tad scrawny. I like they avoided bright colours, darker muted colours are a refreshing change of pace. The arms are poseable, so you can get it properly slashing it’s opponents. It measures 2″ high and 3.1″ long and is packaged with Lystrosaurus. Now to the second of the single set figures, and it’s the…
Becklespinax (Altispinax) (Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Epic Evolution Battle Roarin’ by Mattel)
…auroid. Most reconstructions make it look like a carcharodontosaurid, like Concavenator, which also possesses tall neural spines and comes from early Cretaceous Europe. Why Universal used it as the big bad dino in Chaos Theory is a mystery. They could have used Acrocanthosaurus if they wanted another sail/hump backed dinosaur in the franchise. In fact, there was a time when Gregory Paul classified Altispinax as Acrocanthosaurus. Questionable choic…
Dimetrodon (Savage Strike)(Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom by Mattel)
…ith some of the other genera included in the DR series so far, such as the Concavenator, Dracorex, and the as-of-yet-to-be-released Mononykus, it was also represented in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, inside the Lockwood Manor, in one of the dioramas. As with the other Savage Strike figures, this toy has articulation at all of its limbs, and has an action feature that involves pulling the tail to the side, whereupon its jaw will close upwards. It…
Monolophosaurus (Wild Safari by Safari Ltd.)
…are painted sloppily, not nearly as nice as the paint job on the Carnegie Concavenator which has a beautifully painted head. If they can paint the teeth well on that head, why can’t that happen every time? So I hope that with this model it was just the product of it being the last one painted after a long day of work. The pose is ok, and the colorization is ok, the anatomical details are very good. Other than the paint job, I really do like this…
Megalosaurus (2021)(CollectA)
…ombat with Iguanodon, the truth is that the former lived during the Middle Jurassic while the latter hailed from the Early Cretaceous. Megalosaurus appears to have instead preyed on sauropods and stegosaurs like the Lexovisaurus pictured below. The colours on this toy are more muted than on many previous CollectA theropods. The main ones are dull brown and beige. Very dark brown is used for the stripes and spots covering the body, and applied to t…
Carcharodontosaurus (GR Toys by Haolonggood)
…nd nasal bridge. Comparison with a different “blue version”, from Mattel’s Jurassic World line – two very distinct styles (and price points) When the first photos were published of the models, collectors were understandably skeptical of whether the mass-produced models could match the intricacy of the prototypes. Clearly, however, a lot of care went into the paint process for this figure to maintain the quality advertised. The minute eyes blend wi…
Tyrannosaurus rex (“Cameron” by PNSO)
…feet right, PNSO added a feature, which originate from research papers on Concavenator and Microraptor: the soft tissue surrounding the foot bones. These “fat pads” are really big and supported the animal in terms of weight bearing. The details are also out of this world. From bottom to the top, it literally screams “Bird!” at you. The birdy texture and the detailed skin folds are simply awesome. From the overall appearance, the figure represents…
