The genus Aerodactylus was coined by Vidovic and Martill (2014) for Pterodactylus scolopaciceps, and happens to be named after Pokémon Aerodactyl, even though Aerodactyl is similar in appearance to "rhamphorhynchoid" pterosaurs and not pterodactyloids. However, Bennett (2018) rejected this taxonomic action and placed Aerodactylus back in synonymy with Pterodactylus.
