Sometimes they'll get re-used as specific names however, like Carcharocles megalodon. That ones even more annoying since the original had always remained in use.

"Megalodon" was always the species name, it was never a genus. The original was Carcharodon megalodon. It just got transferred to a new genus (like Brontosaurus excelsus -> Apatosaurus excelsus back to -> Brontosaurus excelsus, except nobody ever called it just "Excelsus").
Megalodon is the genus name of a bivalve, and was originally intended to be the genus name but since it was taken Otodus megalodon became the animals original name. Charcarodon was also proposed, but didn't reach popularity for decades. Or maybe vice versa? Both were proposed by the original discoverer at the same time.

Ah, ok. Well that's a case of preoccupation then, not necessarily of something being invalid, but I guess it's close enough.
