Time Travel Challenge

Consider this: you have a single opportunity to go back in time to any single year with $300 (or whatever your currency is) cash from that particular year, which you can spend on dinosaur merchandise from that particular year, or that came out one or two years prior.

Would you go to a museum gift shop and buy Carnegie models? Would you go to a Toys R Us and buy Dino-Riders? Would you hunt down all the original Battats? Or something else?

Share your thoughts.

I'd go back to a Toy'R'Us in 1993. Obviously for JP merch, but also because it's Toy'R'Us in the early 90s. Probably find some great dinosaur related toys there.

I'd probably have a nostalgia overload if I saw a wall of classic JP toys again.
Keep calm and love dinosaurs

First off, good idea for a thread, even if I'm of the opinion that now's a better time than ever to buy prehistoric animal figures.

Anyway, to answer your question, most likely the early 00's, in a gashapon shop in Japan

Not sure if it's cheating, but I'd go back for a bunch of the late Dino Riders "ice age" stuff and keep it all new in box, turn that $300 into a few thousand. Then spend it on PNSO in modern times. ;D

Haha, makes me wonder, if time travel was possible, would people here go back and get dinosaur toys instead of, you know, go back and see actual dinosaurs? I wouldn't be surprised if they would...

Anyway, though I have most of the original JP toys, it would definitely be 1993, just to relive the insane dinomania that was going on back then. Dinosaurs and JP merchandise was literally everywhere, but I was only 6, so I guess I took it for granted it would stay that way forever... But when I visited a toy store recently, there were hardly any dinosaurs, was pretty sad... The only things were some pretty weird knock offs of the Japanese manga character Gon, in various variations that made him look like other dinosaurs. The most Gon-looking one was this (others had ceratopsian frills and stuff like that):

But just a few years ago, you'd be sure there would always be an assortment of at least Sleich dinosaurs in most toy stores. Nothing now.

Hmm, I'd most want to complete my Battat collection, and maybe scoop up some extras for resale.  ;)  So I'd be going to the mid to late 90's I guess.

Well, when exactly did Marx start their production and what did they cost in those years?

Would be the mid 1950s, whole story here: https://www.dinosaur-toys-collectors-guide.com/Marx-Toys.html

I think the Smithsonian bronze figures by Sterling Lanier came out in the 1970s, so I guess I'd go to DC in the 70s.

But yeah, I'd definitely rather go to the Permian or something.
In the kingdom of the blind, better take public transit. Well, in the kingdom of the sighted, too, really--almost everyone is a terrible driver.

That would be perfectly permissible. For myself, I'd go back to 1990 and nab all the Dino-Riders Ice Age and Series 3 toys, and the Brontosaurus and as other many toys from the previous year as $300 would permit.  :D

I don't need to time travel, just get me to Japan. Seriously though, I would probably go back to the 90's and get the entire Battat line. It's one of the only sets where I strive to be a completionist but it's unlikely to ever happen without actual time travel.
