I am always suspicious of news articles like that where they cannot even get its name right, it was Carcharodon Megalodon, Otodus sp died out 10's of millions years before Megalodon appeared and is considered its ancestor.

This is the line of the major species in the Megalodon tree, some debate there is the odd breakoff stand alone species and subspecies that were inbetween two, a transition, also some species have had many name changes over the years.
The Great White shark was a different line that has changed many times as new information has come out over the years.

Otodus Obliquus - Paleocene era

then came

Carcharocles Auriculatis - Eocene era

then came

Carcharocles Angustidens  -  Oglicene era

then came

Carcharocles Chubetensis  -  Miocene era

and finally

Carcharocles Megalodon  -  Pliocene era
