Meet Itapeuasaurus

A new genus of rebbachisaurid sauropod dinosaur has been described from Late Cretaceous age remains from the Alcantara Formation in the northeastern state of Maranhão in Brazil. The new genus has been given the name Itapeuasaurus cajapioensis ("Cajapió Itapeua lizard"), with the genus name coming from the Itapeua beach locality where the remains of the new genus were found and the Greek word "saurus," meaning "lizard," and the species name coming from the Cajapió municipality in the state of Maranhão where the remains were found. The remains of this new genus, which included a humerus, other limb bones, and vertebrae, were initially discovered in 2014 by Carlos Wagner Silva, a fisherman in the region, with many of the bones being excavated by Brazilian paleontologist Manuel Alfredo Medeiros and his students. The new genus has been found to range from 10 meters (33 feet) to 15 meters (49 feet) long when fully grown. It is classified as a member of the Nigersaurinae, with it being specifically closely related to Demandasaurus and Nigersaurus.
