Using 3D Printing Technology to make Dino Riders Armor

I had a strange thought this afternoon about 3D printers after I saw an episode of The Big Bang theory featuring the topic. I did a google seach and came across this article:

http://patchesofpride.wordpress.com/2013/05/03/adventure-team-fan-creates-his-own-toys-using-3-d-printing-technology-produces-118th-scale-mobile-support-vehicle-mummys-tomb-atv/

In the article it talks about a CAD designer who is also a toy fanatic and recreated old vintage toys for GI Joe in a new scale/size for his modern Joe toys.  How cool would that be if some hobbyist could remanufacturer rare Dino Riders armor pieces or perhaps modify existing designs to make some truly wicked custom dino riders that look like they came straight from Tyco.

The article mentioned 3d printers can be obtained for as cheap as $500... anyone game to try?

its not a bad idea, but you would not only need the printer but also either a somewhat talented 3d modeller, or a 3d scanner and the original part, and then even after that it would be nice to be able to turn around and sell the parts but I personally would be afraid mattel would be litigious.  It's a great idea however, especially if you live near one of those maker bot workshops you can just rent it out for an hour and make really high quality duplicates

The vintage transformers collectors ran into this plight some years back with many of the weapons and accessories for the toys bringing huge prices, and there also being many of the toys which were battery operated and would wear out cogs, gears and other moving parts. An entire aftermarket formed around casting and creating reproduction pieces, even decal sheets for the various toys and many specialists began rebuilding and offering repaint services as well as custom creations. It was found to be viable to create garage castings of these parts and offer them through the secondary market without much repercussion, as long as they were clearly labeled reproductions and used for the intention of restoring and repairing vintage toys that had become problematic.
The toy companies in general are not going to have an issue with restoration of their older and now canceled lines as long as the intention is not to bring to market something that misrepresents their own efforts or impinges on their current market.
For the type of pieces you are needing, you do not need a 3-d printer, just a person who is adept at casting from an original piece and then someone willing to loan theirs for a recasting.

seriously I am stumped as to why I didn't think of just casting them sooner, I am ordering some oomoo and smooth cast soon to cast my sculptures, I will just try it out on my strutho radar disk too,

So....any luck on that casting?
Judging by the lack of activity on this thread, I'm guessing it was a dud :(

It would be awesome though if someone ends up shapewayzing or casting armor bits...
I would go so far as to help sponsor casting materials if funds were the issue.

Well it would work ok I imagine you can check out my other casts, in my art thread, just haven't had a lot of time and filling the gaps in the dish poses a problem

I actually went on ahead and repurposed a free spino model in Thingiverse into a Tyco-style Spino. I have eye beads lying around similar to the ones Dino Riders uses. I also plan to build the armor pieces around the creature itself. I don't think I'm talented enough to engineer articulation for the figure, however.

Right now I'm finished with the spino itself and moving on to the placement of its armor and weapons. Maybe I'll employ a few ideas from the Dimetrodon and the rex.

Oooh, neat.  That's a nice mod on the spino.

Looks like you invested in a resin printer.  Anycubic photon?

I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it on google. I make these!

I've only done the two designs so far, but others will emerge as I have print credit for testing on SW. Thoughts?
