A Clockwork Dinosaur

avatar_Libraraptor @Libraraptor recently showed two old wind-up dinosaurs in his excellent and eclectic collection thread and avatar_Duna @Duna then revealed they were part of a five strong set.

I realised that I had a "clockwork" Stegosaurus in very similar style and then wondered if there was a thread for these fun, but slightly rubbish dinos.

I couldn't find this searching through the Forum so  have created one for members to show off their wares. Please feel free to post your pictures here of any prehistoric wind-up toys and models.

Enough winding up, here's a few snaps of the aforementioned Stegosaurus:

Here she is from her good side:

And showing off her wind-up key:

I have a number of wind-up dinosaurs/prehistoric creatures, including the above figure. Here's a pic:

They're all from the same line, except the Archaeopteryx, I believe. Would love to see the rest of the line! :)

CityRaptor

Hmm, I remember seeing those as a child. I think there was a Parasaurolophus, too.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Crackington

Wow they are great avatar_Roselaar @Roselaar , love that Archaeopteryx!

I think avatar_Libraraptor @Libraraptor has that Ankylosaurus in his photo on his thread.

I should have mentioned on my first post that my Stegosaurus winding mechanism has given up the ghost and only feebly moves now when held in the air :( She could go like the clappers in her prime though!

avatar_CityRaptor @CityRaptor - I think that's right, I recall seeing a Brontosaurus too many moons ago.

Yes, it's coming back to me now, I think there was. I may actually have it somewhere...

Also, maybe that Archeopteryx is from the same line after all, the more I look at it, the more it seems the same style as the rest. Maybe there was a second wave/series?

Very nice post here ... :D

The dinosaur series seems to have 5 figures, stegosaurus, tyrannosaurus, ankylosaurus, dimetrodon? and brachiosaurus. The information I found about them is that they are from New Ray Toys in 1993.

Here it is the brachiosaurus (I found the pic in Google):

These are my toys:

Thanks very much for posting your figures avatar_Duna @Duna  and for discovering the make, New Ray Toys. The 1990s sounds right for manufacture.

I think there may be more than the 5 you identify though. avatar_CityRaptor @CityRaptor remembers seeing a parasaurolophus and the sauropod I saw was a brown brontosaurus, not the brachiosaurus you found (this was in the mid 1990s I recall). With avatar_Roselaar @Roselaar's Archaeopteryx that would bring us to 8 so far. The plot thickens!

I do have another wind-up figure to show, possibly from the same company, though not quite a Dino. I'll save posting the pics for now though and  help wind the thread up some more tomorrow 🙂

I also remember that Dimetrodon-ish figure from my youth, don't know if I had one myself though. Definitely the same line.

I think the Brachiosaurus pictured above is from a different line released around the same time though. It's very different in style, much more smooth and "realistic". I have a Brontosaurus from that same line, probably buried somewhere in the same big old attic box as the other Clockworksaurs. If time and opportunity allows, I'll dig them up. :)

That's a nice one ? @Stolpergeist - it looks a bit more evolved than the Stegosaurus that Roselaar and I have! Thanks for sharing.

I had a look on eBay to see what else is out there for wind-up dinos and there are loads, even new ones. Many are terrible, but I guess that is part of the charm. This thread is for all of them, so as long as they have a clockwork mechanism and are (vaguely) prehistoric, please post your pics and keep them coming!

To that end, here's my other wind-up toy, the Big G:

Sadly, my clockwork Godzilla wasn't able survive my daughters' childhood, unlike taking a pile-driver from a big ape, so no longer works 😟.  It's a nice figure though:

I did some research yesterday on my Stegosaurus and as it turns out it happens to be a knockoff of a bootleg of a Dino-Riders figure.

I think my wind-up Brontosaur is from that same line, it also has a very distinct Tyco look to it. And I think the Brachiosaurus pictured above is also from this line.

Varanops

Stolpergeist, where did you get that magnificent crested newt figurine?  Is that its original stand?  Did it come in a set (other caudates)?  Thanks.

Roselaar

Did some digging in my attic, found these walk-a-saurs:

These charming but rather spinky creatures. Can't make out a company name what with all the stickers.
I'm not sure if the Archaeopteryx is part of the line, feels like it could be though. Also found a card for one of them.
Seems the quadrupeds were the initial release, with the bipeds following in a later wave (have seen less of them online in general).
The bigger Stegosaurus appears to be a bootleg of its smaller counterpart.

More smooth and retro prehistoric figures, by a company called Supreme. They have a distinct Dino Riders/Tyco feel.

Larger walk-a-saurs, company unknown. Cute, but nothing special. Both of them are broken, as opposed to all the smaller figures above, which are still in working order after a good 30 years. All of the figures above are from the early/mid nineties.

Thanks for digging them out avatar_Roselaar @Roselaar, amazing that they still work after all this time. We have a brand name for some at least now, "Walk-a-saur" (there's a b-movie waiting in that name, zombie dinosaurs!).

The brontosaurus looks very like the one I mentioned earlier too, the one I saw a long time ago....
