So it turns out that a specimen was described that finally answered how the jaw of Helicoprion was oriented:

And of course, fantastic artwork by Ray Troll!

So it turns out everyone's favourite buzz saw shark was more likely a chimaera/ratfish! And if this drags others like Edestus and Sarcoprion over...the Safari Toob just changed a lot! They should have included an Iniopteryx after all!

I'm glad this newest concept isn't all that different from most previous ones. I always hated the Purdy version:

Talk about making an exciting animal look boring.

Does that mean we now have more prehistoric chimaera figures than modern ones?!

As represented Holocephalans? I would say so--the only modern made that I know of, every time, is the silver or ghost chimaera (and a weird pokemon-ified elephant nose chimaera, but I won't count that).

In terms of prehistorics, we have Echinochimaera, Helicoprion, Sarcoprion and Edestus.

GUYS. Did you know that Ray Troll is IN A BAND?!? It's delightful. If you've read "Cruisin The Fossil Freeway" which Troll illustrated, you'll notice some familiar topics in the songs they play. And of course there's a song about Helicoprion.  ;D

If you'd like to purchase the albums (as I plan to), I'd recommend doing so via Troll's website (Amazon doesn't have the greatest selection; I haven't checked iTunes yet.)
