40,000 year old frozen wolf head found

The preserved severed head of a 40,000 year old wolf of an unknown species from the last ice age has been discovered near the Tirekhtyakh River in the Republic of Sakha, Siberia. The head, which measures about 16 inches in length and is believed to be from an adult wolf about two to four years old, is the first fully grown Pleistocene wolf with preserved tissue, with its fur, fangs, skin tissue, and even brain tissue appearing to be intact. The head is now under study in order to find potential DNA in the tissue and to use tomographic techniques to non-invasively see inside the skull. The head will also be compared to modern-day wolves in order to understand how the species evolved and to reconstruct its appearance in life. This wolf is being analyzed alongside a frozen cave lion cub, nicknamed Spartak, which is also in extremely good condition. Here are some images and CT scans of the frozen head.
