Consequences of the Brexit for trade with the UK

Dear members,

farewell United Kingdom! Today is the first day of the European Union without the UK.
Politics aside, does anyone have ideas what changes thanks to Brexit if anyone orders from or in the UK? I did not find a thread about that yet.
Any information is appreciated.
Thank you!

February 2020 is the official date for Brexit.
But nothing will change until January 2021 (at least for e-commerce).
After January 2021 Customs taxes could return.
But a lot of economists think that an agreement will be found for a free-taxes commerce between UK and EU.
I hope so.. otherwise...  goodbye EverythingDinosaurs  :'(

This is a sad day for Europe :'( .

I can only speak for us Germans when it comes to shipping costs.
At the moment nothing has changed, as RobinGoodfellow has mentioned.
We still have the EU pricing: https://www.dhl.de/de/privatkunden/pakete-versenden/online-frankieren.html?type=ShipmentEditorProductSelection
If you type in "Switzerland" which is in Europe, but not within the EU, you see what I think we can expect for the U.K. in the future.

Of course I don't know what the British will do. I do know that their shipping quotes tend to be outrageous already these days.
(I'm not talking about EverythingDinosaur here, their quotes have always been fair!)

What RobinGoodfellow posted previously is completely spot-on, but for further context incase anyone wants it; the UK officially left the EU at 11:00pm GMT yesterday, however due to the transition period, all that's immediately changed is that the UK no longer has representation in the EU's legislative bodies. For now trade between the UK and EU is unaffected.

The transition period does end on 31 December 2020 though, and I currently can't say anything about how trade will be affected after that with absolute certainty.

Impossible to buy figures in everythingdinosaur the customs taxes of www.correos.es and adtpostales of the postal group (they are the same) will be abusive and unfair.

Everythingdinosaur sent me figures, the last one was in these last Christmas with the spinosaurus and also in January of this year in the case of the Jetoar Paleocreatures kosmoceratops with a fairly fast shipment and his treatment of both Mike and Sue's was exquisite and Deferential with all buyers. Hopefully the worldwide tariff rates were eliminated since it hurts all buyers of collectible figures and dinosaur toys in my case, but that gives me the impression that it is asking for an impossible one. I said goodbye to everythingdinosaur to my misfortune.

On the other hand, with the problem of the Chinese coranivirus, it seems to me that the purchase of figures in that region of the world will be very restricted and the same can be said of nations in that area of the world such as Japan.

Gutted to be leaving the EU and just hoping that the UK government has the sense to have as close trade relations as possible. That way we can keep close ties, including postage costs with the EU etc. Afraid, I'm not holding my breath for this though, but won't say much more so as not to break the no politics rule and not to upset any Brexit supporters. Personally, I think it's a huge mistake to leave though.....

Will people that are actually IN the UK still be able to buy from ED?

ED is based in the UK, so I think that should answer your question.

Just to be clear,  without causing any damage to ED e-commerce: everyone can buy from ED right now (because ED ships internationally) and everyone will be able to buy from ED after Brexit, even after 2021.
This is not a problem at all.
For UK resident nothing changed (of course..).
And for people outiside UK nothing will change until 2021.
After January 2021 people outside UK could pay a Customs tax to import items.
But that's not sure right now.
Nobody knows what could happen after 2021; maybe an agreement will be done with EU and everything will be the same as now.
Simply we don't know.
Customs taxes don't depend on UK: they depends on Countries (EU or extra-EU).
So there is nothing to be worried about right now..  ^-^

..a sad reminder for EU members: yesterday I received an email from DHL letting me know that from January 1 2021 all UK  packages will go to Customs for inspections because of Brexit.
And every EU Country will apply local Customs taxes on UK products.
I'm specially thinking about Everything Dinosaurs, a really loved web-shop; it will be more expensive buying from it and also from every UK source..
It's really sad.  :'(

The whole Brexit thing is sad. That´s the end of it.

Shonisaurus

It is a pity. I do not understand why the countries of the whole world agree at least from the commercial point of view. That is one of the reasons why unfortunately I will not be able to buy from the UK and unfortunately twice I will not be able to buy from everythingdinosaur, a tariff rate is not desirable for anyone and I say it from my painful personal experience. Customs tax quite heavily on products from outside the EU. It's a complete chore. :(

CityRaptor

Well, that was to be expected. And that's why it is important to vote.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

I was buying some small packages from Scotland earlier this year, then my contact across the pond informed me that shipping costs to the US had nearly doubled overnight on July 1. A package that weighed almost nothing now cost over $30 to ship, and made it prohibitively expensive to get anything from the UK. At least it's heartening to see many members here feel the same way about Brexit as I do.

Not defending Brexit here as there were far better alternatives, but these unreasonable import charges are kind of a decent part of why people supported Brexit in the first place. Brexit didn't cause these charges, these are pre-existing EU policy. The only thing new is that the EU is now also applying them to UK goods.

If you're only interaction as an individual citizen with the EU is paying really high import taxes, even on small purchases, that go back to a central body that frankly can barely control most of the actions of its member states (see, human rights violations in Poland, various international fishery sanction violations, etc.) and don't even go back into your regional government to improve roads or schools, that's naturally going to fuel animosity.

Just saying, in the specific case of import charges, blame is kind of in the wrong place right now. This was always an issue.

As for prices of goods coming out of the UK, that likely isn't even Brexit related. The US has also hiked prices on foreign shipping several times during the past few months. I've (in Canada) been paying less for large packages from Japan lately than I've been for relatively small packages from the US.

Everything_Dinosaur

We avatar_Everything_Dinosaur @Everything_Dinosaur have received a number of enquiries about shipping costs to the European Union now that the UK is out of the customs union (Brexit).  Whilst we cannot comment for other companies, we would like to point out that as soon as the UK officially left the customs union we implemented Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) postage for all our customers in the European Union.  Delivery Duty Paid means that Everything Dinosaur has paid any duties on a parcel so our customers don't have to worry about this.  Our Delivery Duty Paid service is fully trackable and parcels will be delivered to your door.

As you would probably expect from us, on December 29th 2020 we published a comprehensive blog article that explained what these changes mean. You will find the article here: https://bit.ly/3sWRGm7
