The Curious Compendium: Prehistoric Edition - The end of an era! (or many, really)

I'm really enjoying your fine collection of 'classic' dino figures, avatar_Saarlooswolfhound @Saarlooswolfhound . But their absence begs the question ... Do you not collect the more recent PNSO and HLG figures also?

Thank you S @SidB!

To answer your question there is a fairly lengthy discussion that could be had. But to try and sum it up, I collect lots of figures (extant animals too- not just prehistoric) so there has to be someplace I draw a line. And my prehistoric category was largely dormant until just a few years ago. For now, I don't feel like I can comfortably collect the large PNSO and HLG figures due to space constraints, wallet/budget constraints, and while they are truly gorgeous figures they don't appeal to me in quite the same way that the toy brands do (like Safari).

So for now, I initially got the PNSO minis only for their flying and marine reptiles but later had a chance to get nearly the entire set for a reasonable price I couldn't refuse (I am a collector after all- now I am only missing one). I have the PNSO livyatan and a copy(?) of their Meg. I'd like to get others of the more unique taxa like the helicoprion etc. but haven't yet.

Hopefully, this answers your question without going too far into the weeds!

I get what you've said. I've had to draw lines at various points in my collecting career too. Boundaries are not necessarily a negative, of course. Limits are part of definitions, for sure and set value and utility too -consider, a glass of water is virtually useless to the thirsty person without its boundary, the vessel itself.

Saarlooswolfhound

I agree- a hobby like this often requires boundaries in some form. But for anyone who has known me for some time, my boundaries sometimes disintegrate (such as all those PNSO minis creeping in) :)

Saarlooswolfhound

And now we have the subcategory for mammals! We will kick off with the poster child- the Woolly Mammoth (and a friend from the Steppes).

I have gotten a smidge obsessed with these elephantine ancestors over the last 2 years. I had a few in my herd but it has swelled since Eofauna and TNG started producing their other species. Which woolly mammoth is your favorite model?
I love the Eofauna Steppe and the Safari Carnegie.

SidB

As much as I like the new TNG Wooly Mammoth, I still admire Forest Rogers' one the most. In addition to its very high production value, it has a nostalgic aura about it for me as it came into my possession at or near the very beginning of my collecting paleo figures.

Great collections avatar_Saarlooswolfhound @Saarlooswolfhound
Could you possibly add the references of each figure from your next posts ? c):)

Yes !
As well as the release date if possible ?
You have a lot of amazing stuff which I'm not familiar with, and that I'd like to consider for my own collections.
Since I don't want to bother you with questions each time, it would be great if you could provide more details about them O:-)

Any clue regarding the Plesiosaur in #48, by the way ?^^

I can try to post the information for the remaining items- but just so you know, I will be publishing my Prehistorics page on my website (The Curious Compendium) when I've completed my presentation here in about another 2 weeks or so. I don't have detailed information for each model presented on my site as I haven't decided how to do so efficiently, but its intended to give you brands/species present in the images so you can look around on The Toy Animal Wiki and find anything you need!

Hopefully, that makes sense!

Lastly, as for the plesiosaur in the image you mentioned- sadly I don't know anything. I think it only says China (or has no stamp), I got it at a thrift store so I have no provenance for it, and sadly its missing a front flipper on the opposite side.

Saarlooswolfhound

Smilodon!

Who doesn't love these? There were two mounted skeletons at the natural history museum where I grew up. I loved seeing them at every visit.

Brands (top to bottom, left to right)- Earth Story, Custom Repaint Imperial, Papo x3, AAA, CollectA, Marx(?) x3, Mojo x3, PEC, Custom Repaint, TNG, Safari x2

Great, thank you !
I can see that you just did it for your Smilodon's collection and this is most useful.
As for the Plesiosaur, I assume that it could be currently nicknamed « Untitled », like an unknown piece of art lol

I will try to go back through and post the brands for the models I have already done- I just haven't had time yet. Stay tuned! But I will post them for these last 6 photos (so the webpage and thus the brand info should be up and ready to view by the end of next week).

Each and every one of these are such weird and whimsical animals to me- I can barely pick a favorite. What's yours? I think mine is either the Elasmotherium or Paraceratherium.

Brands: Itoy, Safari, TNG, Safari, Custom repaint, Safari, Papo, Safari, Unknown, TNG

SidB

Whoa, that Paraceratherium is impressive, almost overwhelming.

It is! And I bought it secondhand from Eastern Europe.

Better and better, because it certainly isn't cheap brand new!

Saarlooswolfhound

Prehistoric Probiscideans!

Once Eofauna (and TNG) produced these models I was in love- they were done so so well and are still some of my favorites in my entire collection.

Eofauna, Eofauna, Safari, TNG, Eofauna, Bullyland, Safari

SidB

Wonderful collection of proboscidians, avatar_Saarlooswolfhound @Saarlooswolfhound . Neat to see the old Bullyland one. You'll love the new Eofauna Mastodon and Columbian Mammoth. They'll fit right into your herd.

I already love them! I will probably grab them for my birthday (in July)
