Interestingly enough it appears that that species is mainly carnivorous (though it is eating herbivorous insects). I guess purple is possible then, though I don't know too much about scale coloration myself.

Here's a quick render of the swampy water and the 'wet effect' on the side of the Spino.

Off to bed now.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, I am quite happy that I don't need to worry about the legs with this one. :D The whole discussion really inspired me to do a sculpture, though... so I might get my hands on that once there is more evidence and/or more reviews to the whole thing.

I am quite curious about your concept now, are you going to build a swamp in your park? :)

Per my motto.." Everything is a facade" , yes..and no. lol

My intention is to place rocks and trees in a semi circular pattern and add high grasses to simulate a water filled area..the Spino would be attacking from behind them. :)

fabricious

Curious to see that one come to life, Chris! Although you're probably held up for a while with your 'big lady' and the mosasaur. ;)

Nice, reminds me of duckweed

That was the intention, DinoLord! I could imagine that a plant similar to Lemna minor might have existed in the Cretaceous already.

A bit more color variation in the base pattern, a new dark stripe on the sail, more reddish display colors. I might add some more patterns to the front part of the shoulders, need to try it first, though.

I am quite enjoying this one so far.

Adding the first layers of shadows and lighting. I love this stage, since suddenly the image starts to come to life.

I love to see works progress like this, thanks for sharing :)

fabricious

Me too, actually. I'm glad you like it! :)

Started adding a few scales and wrinkles...

Please click the image to see the texture on the neck, what do you think about that? Looking good? Should I make it more crocodilian?

...really learning a lot from this thread.  'So it's shadows first before detailing the scutes.... got it.
Don't mind me here... I'm just taking notes.

Not sure how plausible crocodilian scales are, but they certainly look very good!

Seeing it as there are several species of reptiles that adapted to a similar life style as crocodiles and thus having very crocodile-like scales, I'd say there is a good chance of it.

That's just the way I do it with this one, I always do something different.

Haven't been working on the Spinosaurus again so far (due to exams), but I started a neat little project in between, initiated by watching a lot of really helpful tutorials. Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis, my favorite ceratopsian, also to be seen in my Shapeways-thread over in the 'Dinosaur kits' category (just thought I'd post it in here as well, for you to see).

(Perspective is on in this picture, don't worry about the giant head. ;) )

DinoLord

Just saw this on DA; maybe you could incorporate that species into your Spinosaurus painting  when you start that up again?
