Oh yeah for sure. We make our own faux dynamite for the haunt already..really easy with paint , pvc and a little string.

Very nice  ^-^

Thanks Boki, it just gives an idea of what I'm looking to do really. I'm currently asking Scott Hartman for permission to use his art on our signs and displays as well.

If anyone has any ideas I'm open to listen to them..you never know what might stick.  I'm building a prop shelf with interesting things Paleontologists use while looking for dinosaur bones. So far I have bags of plaster, burlap and dynamite.  Anything else that might be considered neat and cool ?

How much dynamite do you have?

A few sticks. I could probably create a box full in an hour or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't their some sort of acid used to eat away rock from fossil material ? I bottle with a label on it and alcohol might suffice ?

Harder matrix with fossils is often removed using either recycled aluminum pellets to air blast it away, or by painting the surrounding rock with a mild strength acid to slowly eat away the material and expose more bone. I am currently having an albertosaurus block containing some bone material cleaned and prepped using just such methods. The block is a riverstone mud type rock that is extremely hard and contains chunks of smaller rock and river debris. As the bone is exposed, it is covered with glue or sealed so the it is not exposed, and then more acid is added until necessary matrix has been removed. Generally it is used only for really difficult material that normal abrasives and manual tools will not remove.

Interesting, thanks for the info ! So a bottled just labeled " acid " would probably work as a prop on our shelf then ?

Would anyone be interested in donating any old/used small tools like paleontologists use in the field ?  I have a few shelves left and it would be cool to put objects like that there so the kids can actually see what they use.

I'm also considering getting some hard hats with our logo on them..I just kinda think it would cool to let the kids dress up a bit.

Strongly suggest contacting a local dentist you might be on good terms with. As they use dental picks, and similar tools the points either wear down or chip, or sometimes even break making them useless for dental work . You can often get a box full just for asking. I know that I was able to get a dozen or so for various matrix removal projects from my dentist that looked almost new, but were worn beyond his use horizon apparently. As for the bottle marked acid, I would label it  "Diluted acid" so if the children attempt the same thing at home..........generally when working with acid, you would utilize goggles and perhaps face masks so those might make good props as well. The acid is generally painted onto the fossil as opposed to submerging the entire piece, unless it is massive and alot of material has to be removed. So even brushes would not be a bad prop to have.

Cool idea ! I have a friend who is a dental nurse that might be able to get those for me.

Good thinking. I can do that no problem.   For reason I have this bit of info about baby dinosaur bones and " acid baths " floating around my head.  I know there was a bit in there about the bones being so tiny they couldn't leave them in the acid for long.

If you can think of anything else that might kids / parents say " wow really ? " I could display let me know.

What are you doing about outside advertising?

amargasaurus cazaui

The bit about baby bones and acid sounds somewhat like what Terry Manning said about his work with dinosaur eggs. He would purchase a dozen segnosaur eggs, and determine which likely held embryonic remains within. At that point he would begin dissolving the outer egg with aid, to reveal the bones inside. As he worked, he would coat the bones with glue, or resin to protect them, and continue dissolving the egg further and further until he had revealed the dinosaur within. He is credited with prepping some of the finest dinosaur emrbyos known within eggs. His technique took a year or so per set of eggs but he created some masterpiece fossils .
In this vain you might be able to purchase water solouble eggs that contain dinosaurs and allow the kids to paint them with acid (water ) to reveal the dinosaur within.

Outside the building, outside the Park, or outside the city, county, state ?  Seriously I'm asking.  :)

That's a neat idea ! I'll check on the cost and see if it's feasible. ;)

Outside the park.  What kind of attendance are you expecting at the park?

We need to get brochures done and out there..I have a couple museums in the area that have agreed to carry them.  I operate on mostly facebook traffic and word of mouth now. We also plan to take a dinosaur costume to parades and such.  We've done okay, I think this past Saturday we did 40 people or so.  I have church groups, birthday parties and hopefully school groups as well coming.

Starting some paint work ! Just need a few more donations to finish !

Thanks ! Doing my best with what we have as usual. I try to find something interesting we've not done before as well.
