Haha, he looks so ill-tempered in the first picture. 'Who goes there?! Trespassers?!'  :))

Yes, perhaps enlarge the pupils a little, so he doesn't look so cranky all the time.  ;D

Blade-of-the-Moon

lol I can do that.. ;D

He'll need a little attitude though when the tyrannosaur comes to play.. ;D

Thagirion

I like the small pupil. I prefer them on most characters. It does make him look wilder and more aggressive which is good.

I was gonna vote for a larger pupil - for precisely the same reason. It looks just slightly possessed  :o Too cartoony for a statue like this, if you ask me. Granted, dinosaur eyes do have some pretty unusual looks in real life, but I don't think I've ever seen a pupil get quite that small.

By the way, I quite like the color scheme you've chosen.

Thanks, the smaller pupil is courtesy of the Papo figure  I have here.

I may increase it slightly and just see how it looks. If it's bad..well it's only paint after all.  :)

I like the larger pupil on the Styrac. :)

And the Gorgosaurus looks like it's going to be awsome! :))

Thanks !

So far it has been an awesome pain in the butt..lol Mostly due to issues with getting it to stand correctly and securely. But I think that's been taken of for now and I'm trying to finish wire work during the day and do the head at night.

Tyrannosaur head progress :

Love the tyrannosaur head, and the styraco looks great! If I ever pass your house, I'll know it instantly.

lol yeah I used to tell people the big red brick house across from the football field..now  I just tell em' to look for the Dinosaurs..they can't miss it ! ;D

I'm trying to decide right now how much skull ornamentation to give it. It is a juvenile so it probably would have all the big thick bumps that an adult would. I will make some slight ones on the snout since Gorgo's are known for that feature.  Maybe just small bumps on the ridges and such as well.. :?

Yayyyy! The Styraco's colors are done. He looks great, Chris! Nice choices I say. The leafy branch was a good idea for pattern making. I've used all sorts of stuff to get different patterns and paint textures. It's fun to think out of the box, right! And yeah, I think the pupil looks better a little larger, especially since he's now in a shaded area under the tree. And, it will show up better from farther distances in the yard.

Your Gorgo is coming along nicely too. Should the ends of the snout be a bit more rounded? I'm mostly thinking about the end of the lower one. Does it look a little too squared off, especially when looking at the second pic that's facing front?

Glad you like the Styrac ! He wasn't nearly as much trouble as  I had thought..though the skull gave me some issues..lol

The front end of the lower jaw ? It could be..I am working from a 1/1 skull but it's flat ..just a wall hanger piece and it's copied from the fossil so it's a bit crushed.  I can't find any good skull sketches from above for this species other than one from the actual specimen which is as  I mentioned flattened a bit.. :/  I'm adding details..but I will try and check it and see. Thanks for the input !

Does the horns over the eyes look right ?  I'm thinking now they should be thinner and slanted outwards a bit..opinions ?

Wow, that's a nice Gorgo, bet it will be kickass once completed!  8)

Just one thing... Shouldn't the skull fenestrae be less visible under the skin? Remember, no animal (except for crocs) has shrink-wrapped heads  ;)

Hmm..I'm not sure. All the references  I used showed them to one degree or the other. I didn't want the super deep..but just visible. I'd say they stick out less an inch ?   I will say my personal preference when it comes to comparing dinosaurs to living animals is a nice mix of bird and reptile. A little croc in theropods could be good.

I know once piece I kept looking at was Pastori's " Airbender " :

Since it was on the cover of PT had right beside me it was pretty easy to check..I also used Krentz's Judith model a bit :

Sharptooth

Well, i guess it comes to personal preferences  ;)

I rather envision dinosaurs with a lil' more flesh on their faces (obviously depending on the species), but i think you're also right, some dinos could have looked like a mixture of crocs and birds in the head department.

I guess bud..it seems to pretty much be up in air really. Could be a lot of different factors as well at work .

I've heard how theropod brains tend be more like a croc's and some have similar skin patterns to them so it's really anyone's guess still I suppose.
