This trailer confirms a lot of those reddit spoilers. Unless this is like the Avengers: Endgame marketing where a lot of fake bits were included in the trailers (to kill plot spoilers), I don't think I'll be surprised by any scene anymore.

'Still got tix for 2 separate screenings though. Super excited, regardless of spoilers.

*edit* missed the early screening, ugh. I'll have a go tomorrow.  My friend who hated the 2014 movie enjoyed this one, so I'm guessing the human:kaiju ratio is now skewed in favor of the kaiju.

Appalachiosaurus

I saw the earliest screening I could yesterday and I loved it. The reason I loved G'14 was because it put Kaiju in our modern world. It was grounded in mountains of realism, they don't follow through with that in the sequel for all the right reasons. Realism be damned, this movie is a near perfect Showa-style Godzilla flick. Balls to the wall action to make your ears explode, strong human characters and story to hold the action together, a great message to elevate it above dumb filler, and enough monsters to shake every stick on earth at. For the Monster Action there is almost too much, an "every kaiju scene" montage would be the entire movie. The movie never slows down, my heart was mush by the end, and all four lovelies have their time to shine. The fights are the best in the franchise, bar none, and all the Kaiju have so much personality that these may be my favorite incarnation of each. Godzilla especially is great. He symbolizes both nuclear power and the might of mother Earth, he symbolizes the utopia humanity should strive for to live in harmony with nature instead of destroying it, and he shows that nuclear power can be a way to achieve it. It's a wonderfully refreshing departure from the usual "science bad" morals of past series, and the sheer power and awe he commands with his tsunamis and explosive Atomic fire means he's both a smart metaphor and a fun watch.

I saw it today and I like it. I like the 2014 one a lot and to me this one improved certain aspects of that film but felt less grounded or realistic, I know it's a kaiju film and just the concept of gigantic beings stomping and flying around throws realism aside but the 2014 one was less over the top I guess. I've read critics that said the humans were equally or more boring than the previous film and I think they are crazy. The problem maybe is that there are a lot of characters but 4-5 of them I found more engaging than the main family of the 2014 film.

Spoiler
three things I tought were "badly made": Maddison's escape and arrival at the stadium it was too easy for me, the security and vigilance was absent totally. The other are that the Godzilla meltdown thing it was too fast and sudden ( It was said that it was a secondary effect of it's  bomb awakening but I felt it rushed) and the motivation and origin of Ghidorah could have been explained better

I went in with low expectations because the reviews weren't great, but man, if you're a true Godzilla fan - you are gonna love this movie. I was also worried about this new movie messing with established characters, but all the backstories fit in with what you know well enough - they don't RUIN anything like so many films based on preexisting franchises do. Hell, they even use the original movie score in places.  There were several scenes where I actually got chills.

My only gripe is what with the next movie about a battle royale with King Kong, how exactly is an ape, albeit a giant and powerful ape, supposed to stand up to the powers we witness Godzilla exhibit in this film? It seems like Kong Vs Godzilla should have built up to King of the Monsters and not the other way around.

And to all those who complained about the first movie not having enough monster action, well, the beasts in this film probably have almost as much screen time as the human characters. The actors do fine, but I think Ken Watanabe stands out with the most likeable character - Dr Serizawa from the previous film. However, Godzilla himself really steals the show.

I think you all should really see this film, I'm definitely gonna get another ticket.
In the end it was not guns or bombs that defeated the aliens, but that humblest of all God's creatures... the Tyrannosaurus rex.

ITdactyl

I'm torn.
It's the same feeling I had after the Avengers: Endgame screening.  I was so happy to get "closure" for the long story arcs and seeing [almost] all the Avengers on screen vs. an army of villains. And yet, after 2 screenings, I still felt that Captain America: Civil War was the better film.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is (almost) everything I hoped for in a Kaiju movie. Everything about the Titans was well executed (plotholes be d@mned). I was giddyexcitedamess after the screening - I wanted to buy ALL the Rodan toys, except that the toys were on limited distribution... Aaaarrrggh!!!! Rodan!

And yet I still think Godzilla 2014 is the better movie.

Negative reviews mostly were from critics. Audience scores range from 80% to 90%.

And lets face it: a lot critics will automatically declare a Godzilla movie bad, and will automatically praise certain other movies...
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

When I saw the rotten tomatoes score three days ago I was in shock. I immediately got depressed, thinking that all the hype was for nothing.
But after being some fan reviews I´m back to being hyped again, although toned down this time. I'm pretty sure I will love the movie once I watched it.

The thing was that, because of the bad reviews, not everyone is going to appreciate the movie, and it´s kinda sad because this could have become one of the best Godzilla movies and also one that general audiences would have some respect to it. Because of the bad reviews, there will be divided opinions and this movie will not have the "prestige" I would like it to have amongst general audiences. For example, I can already see youtube channels making videos like:" Why Godzilla failed, King of the monsters is a mess, Monsterverse, another failed cinematic universe...Like they do with DC films or such. Thats a same cause I wanted this film to get much more appreciation and unfortunaltey I don't think it will. Hey, sometimes even if movies have good reviews they will still get backlash from people, there still a lot of people who don't like Godzilla 2014 and Kong SK despite both having good reviews, same thing happens with Jurassic World (the first one).

But still, what really matter is my personal enjoyment and I think I will love the film regardless.

Having said that I am extremely angry because the film got delayed three weeks in my country. >:(
Right now I am in another country and I could watch it on English with subtitles but I already got a friend in my country to watch it with me (maybe two) and I don't want to betray her/them.

Also can't wait to get the NECA figures and the SH Monsterarts Ghidorah.

I agree that even if it has good audience scores it's going to have that critics score's  stain. And it probably will hurt it's box office in the US at least. I hope the international box office is strong enough to save it to have both critics and box office failure labels.

On another note this film has made me make a new rule for myself : just watch the teaser or first ever trailers. I saw trailer 2 and I think it would have been better if I hadn't. My brother didn't saw any footage and was his jaw dropped every time a monster appeared first.

I have very mixed feelings. I was on board until Mothra showed up as a collaborator for the military and at that point I thought consciously "they have no awareness of the source material".

It was a fun movie, the effects were outstanding and the callbacks were well executed and clever, but I have serious issues with the contradictory moral narratives. It also failed to learn from the mistakes of its 2014 predecessor, continuing with a highly unlikable protagonist, and his family who've been ham-fisted into the plot (though significantly less ham-fisted than 2014's).

For example establishing early on that the military wants to kill all of the animals and doing so would destroy the worlds collective ecosystems. So surely the people trying to stop this would be the protagonists right? Nope. They're the villains. The protagonists are a group of MONARCH scientists who are completely content living in the military's vindictive shadow. The film goes pretty far out of its way to make sure the military are seen as the naive "therealgoodguysTM" supporting protagonists.

And MONARCH isn't much better, as other than Serizawa most of them aren't shown as having any spine to stand up against the military who is trying to destroy their lives work and kill the animals they clearly care about to some extent. Things only work out in the end in favour of the protagonists by combination of groundwork done by the villains and sheer coincidence.

Mothra got absolutely sidelined and it was kind of sad, but not surprising given how little attention she was given in marketing and frankly even in her redesign. Fortunately this came with an unexpected but very welcome up in Rodan's presence and screen time.

People put far too much faith in critics and their opinions.  Go in and make your own, says I!  It's not very often that I agree with the majority of critics.
I'm excited for REBOR's Acro!  Can't ya tell?

Thank god I only saw your first pharagraph.
Please use a spoiler tag, at least until a week or two have passed. Some people have not seen the movie yet.

I genuinely don't consider those spoilers. I was careful to avoid anything central to the movies story or descriptions of any sequences. All of what I covered was either presented within the first 30 seconds of the film, in the trailers, or was entirely my own opinion or interpretation. If you're going to accuse someone of something maybe actually read what they wrote first next time?

The only thing I would consider a vague spoiler is that I said in my opinion Mothra got the short end of the stick, which is an opinion people have been sharing for weeks now.

I do not care what the critics thought or what scores they have on rotten tomatoes.  My kids and I are off to see it and they are super excited. That's what's cool. In the end I am sure it will not live up to my expectations but I expect my kids are going to have a blast.

I think people have always predicted that Mothra would get the short end of the stick anyways.  I mean, yeah, they've changed her up a bit design wise, but she's still a giant moth going up against a lightning blasting three headed dragon, a fire pterosaurian, and a radioactive...I don't wanna call the big G a dinosaur because he clearly isn't anymore just based on his design and how he holds himself, but he's not exactly a lizard either...but still, you see my point.

I won't go into depth but this is personally my favourite Godzilla movie of all, I feel like the monsters were done absolutely perfectly and I love Monarch.

Spoiler
I think that's a bit unfair, both the military and the terrorists are show in a bad light for the exact opposite reasons. The real difference is that, at the end, the Admiral admits his mistake and joins Monarch to stop the terrorists. The movie states that exterminating the titans to preserve humanity is wrong, but exterminating humanity to save the titans is just as bad. The terrorist are suited up versions of those first-world eco-warriors who would rather a village in Alaska starve than a single whale die. The people who think all hunting should be illegal even if it helps keep populations in check. Basically the kind who'd rather poor people die than animals, which the film outright says is wrong. The message of the film is that we have to balance our human civilization with the natural world to benefit both, not that we need to revert to a fantasy where humans were chilling with deer and talking to trees.

I myself liked the movie...bit long and involved for a monster duke em out type, but it manages to deliver on the fun and action. Not worried about critics, youtube reviews or others perceptions...I found it a good use of my time and money, nuff said.
In watching the movie and so forth I think a great argument could be made for a stand alone Mothra movie.I found the depiction rather catchy and would like to see this as a stand-alone perhaps with an entire family of the species
