Picture needed: Kinto Favorite 2004 BLACK Tyrannosaurus

I'm guessing that this place might be the spot for this thread. I've always wanted to acquire the (Kinto) Favorite 2004 black version of their Tyrannosaurus.  I've got the green and brown variants, but as many of you already know, there was a very limited release of a black version back in the day.

I recently watched an eBay auction push the price of the black one (the first that I've ever seen available), to over $200.00 Cdn. for what is essentially a $15-18 toy. I think NOT!

So, I've decided to get another green one from DeJankins and paint it for my collection (not for resale). The thing is that I'd like to match the nuances of the original paint job, if there are any, in my repaint. Does anyone have a picture of this black model that they could share? It would be hugely appreciated.

Sim

I've always liked the sculpt of this Favorite Tyrannosaurus, I think it's one of the nicest representations of the animal.  Did you know that in addition to the green and the brown variants, there's more than one black variant?  There's at least two.

1. The black and blue variant can be seen here: http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=656.0

2. The black and yellow variant can be seen here: http://dinotoyforum.proboards.com/thread/1664

I'm not sure if there was any other black variant of the Tyrannosaurus due to most posts discussing the Favorite colour variants in the Recent Acquisitions thread having lost their images due to Photobucket.  The posts I'm thinking of are on the following pages:

Thanks, Sim. You're right about there being more than one black sub-variant - the seller had mentioned another one of somewhat lesser quality (in his/her opinion).

Daspletodave

I believe there were only the two black variants mentioned by Sim, with the links to the pics. I have both versions. My "black and blue" version is the later 2009 release that came in the black blister pack (as opposed to the one in the auction that came in the original 2004 series  white blister pack) and the only difference is that the eyes are painted a bit more sloppily on mine. Otherwise the paint scheme on mine is the same as in the linked photo.
Hope this helps.

SidB

@ Daspletodave: the difference with the paint application around the eyes must be what the auction was referring to. Thanks for the additional clarity.

I see - the 2009 seems to have substantially more black on it. Thanks for the visuals on these. This means that the black and yellow variant noted by Sim is something strikingly different. All seem worthwhile acquiring, if the price is less than an arm or a leg.

A belated thanks!

Interesting to see these. I wasn't aware of so many variants of this one! I have the brown (ish) and green versions myself; one of my favorite Tyrannosaur figures (no pun intended). You learn something new here every day.

This reply has been two years in the making, with several fits and starts, but I'll be sharing the outcome of the assistance rendered to me by avatar_Sim @Sim and D @Daspletodave back when I'd made my inquiry. As the initial request noted, colored variants of Favorites 2004 Soft model Tyrannosaurus are not only virtually impossible to come by in North America, but very expensive as well. Prohibitively so.

Therefore I set out to acquire several of the available two variants from Dejankins, with a view to converting them into the three types that were released on a limited basis in Japan, but nowhere else. I engaged the same artist who so capably executed the painting of the never-released but projected Battats that Dan L had intended to make available, but whose passing short-circuited their planned retailing. (These can be seen, BTW, on the Battat release thread elsewhere on the DTF, submitted a few months ago).

I'll be posting these rexes soon on this revived thread for your enjoyment and  as a thanks to the two members who graciously helped to point me in the right direction. As well, I'll include some relevant "bonus" figures.

SidB

For those who are later comers to the Favorite "Soft" model world, the 2004 rexes were considered among the very best of their time and indeed still stand up quite well accuracy and quality-wise. The foundational pair were distributed outside of Japan, though they never had a wide availability. The only two sources that I know of today are Dejankins for sure and perhaps still the Black Hills Institute. There was a a pair of successor Tyrannosaurs issued in 2013, one lightly feathered, one traditional. Here, for those unfamiliar with them, are the baseline 2004 pair, in green and brownish orange.

SidB

Yes, I'll be posting the variants shortly - with a twist.

SidB

If one examines the "black" Tyrannosaurs referenced by avatar_Sim @Sim and D @Daspletodave , it will become apparent the there are actually two variations evident: a blue-black one, where the blue predominates and a black-blue figure where that is reversed. Now, realizing the it would be a cold day in hades before I'd ever be able to acquire either one, using the "baseline" figures fro Dejankins, I commissioned my friend to repaint two into the above special editios, Blue-black and black-blue. Here is the blue-black variant commissioned by me:

The third variation is the dramatic yellow and black. This was originally sold with a small plastic display case, I believe. Mine, of course, lacks this as it is a re-paint, like the others:

Nice repaints S @SidB!  I look forward to seeing the bonus figures!

SidB

This next piece, an unique one,  was not a direct Favorite release, but rather an acquisition from eBay. It was repainted by one inactive member, avatar_copper @copper , who used to do commissions for DTF members, for another currently inactive one, avatar_thelordsgym @thelordsgym , who periodically sold good pieces on his eBay site for quite reasonable prices (I have a couple).

I've had this slightly reworked to get the paint job to where I wanted it to be, particularly on the crests. It's quite a striking specimen and would have sold well if Favorite had marketed one similar to it, IMO.

SidB

After a nine year hiatus, Favorite produced these two T-rexes, of which the brown-black version is rather commonly available. Less common is a grey-black variant, seen here. They have the virtue of being quite stable on their feet, with or without the base. Accompanying them was a feathered version. It needs the base for stability. I prefer the unfeathered type of the two, but still would choose the 2004 predecessor over it. Still, they can make a neat pairing, as the last posting will show.

SidB

Finally, combining the "Copper" variant of the 2004 model, which remains my "favorite" (pun not intended), with a commissioned repaint of the 2013 unfeathered version gives this pairing. The 2004 with the maroon colored crests is 'dad'. 'Mom' is the slightly larger 2013 figure. She's bigger and meaner, so he has to watch his p's and q's. Hope that you have enjoyed the show, the culmination of my search for the varieties of this somewhat iconic Tyrannosaurus of yesterday.

I have the black Trex. A friend got it for me years ago when he went to japan. Im not very attached to it. I would be willing to sell it.
