Gigantoraptor (CollectA)

At four metres tall, eight metres long, and more than two tons in weight, Gigantoraptor is by far the biggest known oviraptorosaurid. Its toothless lower jaw suggests a herbivorous diet (the rest of the skull is unknown), but its powerful limbs and sharp claws meant that it was not an animal to be trifled with.

CollectA’s 2009 Gigantoraptor figure is very small, measuring slightly under 14 cm long and just over 7 cm tall. Indeed, were it not for the name on its belly, one could easily mistake this for a representation of a smaller oviraptorosaurid. It is coloured dusty yellow with orange on the head and the small tail fan, blue on the back of the neck, orange and blue on the wings, brown at the tips of the fingers and toes, blue eyes, and a red mouth. Quite the contrast from the brighter and sharper colour schemes of CollectA’s more recent feathered dinosaurs.

This certainly is a very bird-like dinosaur. The wings are held out to the sides in a display posture, the long neck is in an S-curve, and the curved head looks rather like a hen’s minus a comb. It stands very well thanks to its oversized feet.

Aside from the head, underbelly, and feet, the body is entirely feathered, but the sculpting is less than impressive. It looks more like the Gigantoraptor‘s skin is shrivelling up. Makes it look more like a plucked turkey than a living one. Also, the claws on the hands and feet are unpainted and overly blunt.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call the CollectA Gigantoraptor a truly bad toy, but it’s definitely not a good one. “Fair” is probably the kindest description for it. The underwhelming sculpting and the small size don’t do justice to such a fantastic dinosaur. CollectA’s products have improved by leaps and bounds over the years and it is my earnest hope that they will produce a larger, better version of Gigantoraptor in the future. In the mean time, unless you happen to be a big fan of oviraptorosaurids, you’re probably better off saving your money.

  • Hmm… well, while he may not be the most life-like oviraptorosaur out there (not that there’s much competition), he’s certainly is the most chocobo-like! I’m unable to find much fault with his goofy expression & big ol’ plodding feet when he’s just so very… friend-shaped. And yellow. So very, very yellow. I’ll so be picking up this guy and sneaking him into a friend’s Final Fantasy shelf when they’re not looking… (wonder how long it’ll take them to notice?)

  • I agree with your assessment; this toy is merely “fair” and we’d be better off waiting for a better version of this species. If we ever get that better version, however, I might consider purchasing this one to represent a juvenile.

  • Undoubtedly one of his own early days Collecta very loose figure.

I have to admit that this figure was disappointed. While I hope and wish that in the near future Collecta make a worthy recreation paleoartística put this figure up to the excellence that the company is today.
