Therizinosaurus (Papo)

…t. In this very mixed bag of qualities in terms of accuray, let’s see what Papo offers to kids and collectors alike…. First of all, the Papo Therizinosaurus is a most impressive piece of molded plastic. The detailing is nothing short of fabulous, right as one is used to with Papo, but still, this figure does not need to hide from any high priced resin model. It stands a proud 22 cm high and the arms stretch out 13 cm. The articulated jaw allows fo…

Ceratosaurus (Papo)

…(7.8 inches) long and 8cm (3.1 inches) tall, this definitely isn’t one of Papo’s largest figures, but don’t let that dissuade you. The pose is fantastic. With some of Papo’s other prehistoric releases, namely their Acrocanthosaurus and Cryolophosaurus, boasting such dynamic poses it’s actually nice to see a figure with a more subdued stance. There’s not a lot happening here and, truth be told, that’s far from a bad thing. It’s incredibly likely t…

Triceratops (Papo)

…n my previous review of Papo’s Parasaurolophus, I pointed out that not all Papo’s pre-Allosaurus dinosaur figures were necessarily Jurassic Park copies – but this Triceratops definitely is. It will therefore be more appealing to JP fans than anyone else, but like all Papo figures it’s quite a nice piece in its own right. If we excuse the colour scheme. The biggest Jurassic Park-giveaway are the horns, which, just as in the movies, are bizarrely co…

Parasaurolophus (Papo)

…se is in store. TEETH inside the beak! What on Earth are they doing there? Papo, you’re just creating unnecessary extra work for your factory employees with this utterly baffling idiosyncrasy. They’re only in the lower half of the beak, they’re accompanied by a nice little tongue and they’re only visible on close inspection, but they’re infuriating just because they’re so bizarre! Still, overall a pretty good Parasaurolophus from Papo. Even if it’…

Tupuxuara (Papo)

…my palm; the entire head of the model is the same size as my thumb! Since Papo doesn’t work in a set scale one has to wonder why Papo would sculpt it so small, but with the release of their larger Apatosaurus model last year it’s no surprise that their other model would be something smaller and cheaper to produce. The good news is that despite its size no details were sacrificed. Although not as detailed looking as the promotional photo you still…

Apatosaurus (Papo)

…t measures 46 cm long. This makes it the longest prehistoric figure in the Papo line to date. You’re going to need a good length of shelf space to display this one! As with nearly all Papo products, the Apatosaurus‘ colour scheme is nothing to write home about. Its main colour is medium brown with light brown for the underbelly and black wash stripes running along the length of its back. Its eyes are dark brown, its teeth are white, and the inside…

Dimetrodon (Papo)

…a scaly beast with a vicious set of fangs, would seem to play perfectly to Papo’s strengths and, indeed, this might be one of their best figures so far. In the past, Papo have scarcely ever been faulted for their production values, which have remained consistently excellent. Rather, they’ve been criticised for haphazard anatomical accuracy and/or lazily leaning on creature designs used in certain 20-year-old movies. Since the appearance of Dimetro…

Ankylosaurus (Papo)

…and spikes, eyes, tongue – is painted flawlessly. In terms of aesthetics, Papo remain without peer at this price point, and the careful paintwork even puts some expensive resin models to shame. The pose is an interesting one. Thanks mostly to their bulky, squat frame, the majority of ankylosaur figures tend to have fairly similar poses – just standing or walking with the tail swinging out to one side. However, Papo’s “Ankylosaurus” is posed crouc…

Pachyrhinosaurus (Papo) (New for 2010)

…of the skin! I wish they would have made them all more uniform in color. (papo Allosaurus head for scale purposes) All in all this is the best Pachyrhinosaurus replica on the market. The price, however, is a little off-putting – it’s the same size as the Wild Safari Triceratops but it’s triple the price! For that I think they could have made it the same size as the Papo Triceratops, but this is still one of the best ceratopsian toys ever produced…

Iguanodon (Papo)

…never watched Disney’s Dinosaur but I am aware of the character design and Papo have chosen a colour scheme which echoes that, perhaps to give some familiarity to fans of that film whilst providing a figure that is somewhat (slightly) more accurate. Conversely, it’s not too dissimilar to either the Papo Dilophosaurus or their baby trike but is simpler than the scheme of both of these figures. Nonetheless it’s pleasing and has been beautifully appl…

Acrocanthosaurus (2018 Version by Papo)

…r scheme (but get it quickly, because it is out of production now and may not be available much longer) or this repaint, or both. Both may be available online at eBay, Amazon, or wherever Papo’s figures are sold. Thank you for your attention and until next time! And for a little bonus, here is my entire Papo collection (for the moment):…

Giganotosaurus (Mini)(Papo)

…this mighty monster, it will score higher on the accuracy scale than this one. Overall, I like this miniature Giganotosaurus in spite of its glaring faults. The bright colours are a welcome departure from Papo’s usual palette, and it’s fun to have dinosaur toys small enough to carry around in one’s pocket. Keep in mind though that it’s relatively pricey, just like all Papo toys nowadays….

Tyrant Twosome (Brown Running T. rex and Rainbow T. rex by Papo)

…nd unique. Blueback really stands out from the other, mostly monochromatic Papo dinosaurs. Only the Archaeopteryx rivals her. I have to say, I seriously hope Papo isn’t planning to reissue more of their dinosaurs this way, because it’d be very hard to keep from buying them! Both Roughskull the Brown and Blueback the Beautiful are great toys. Inaccurate, yes, but dynamic, impressive, and full of personality. And again, the new colour schemes make t…

Woolly Mammoth (Papo)

…sal: At first glance this toy figure might seem like a pathetic attempt by Papo, as the style and pose look generic and plain. Even though I think this toy lacks the polish that we are used to from Papo, it is actually a well sculpted and wonderful model. Most people tend to like dynamic and playful figures, but there is nothing wrong with a mammoth just relaxing and taking in the wide vista of the open steppe. There is plenty of detail which is a…

Allosaurus (Papo) (Review)

…t touches the left knee. The figure is 26cm long so it is smaller than the Papo Spinosaurus – it is roughly to scale with the other papo theropods. The claws are black and the teeth are white, while the skin is covered in a mottled pattern of greys and greens with some orange highlights. The eye ridges are typical of this genus and are beautifully highlighted with orange and capped with ornamental scales. The eyes are yellow with black pupils. In…

Mosasaurus (Papo)

…er either of CollectA’s versions, Favorite Co’s version, or even PNSO’s version. My preference is for the 2023 CollectA edition, which has less detailed paint work, but looks more like Mosasaurus. If I hadn’t been sent a review sample, the Papo one would never have been in my hands. If your primary interest is a high level of detail and complex paint work, and you aren’t bothered by fanciful embellishments, well, you might be a Papo fan, and in th…

Steppe Mammoth (Papo)

…g tusks, shorter bodies and larger humps and more body hair.) True to most Papo figures (the new Papo Woolly Mammoth sadly excluded) the level of detail and general accuracy of the animal make it, next to the Safari large Wooly Mammoth, one of the two best Mammoth figures out there. But you’d better look quickly as its becoming rare to find – though the prices are still quite low ($9 – $20 range, on ebay and a few Internet shops that still have it…

Gorgosaurus (Papo)

…e. This is a really accurate reconstruction of a Gorgosaurus, no thanks to Papo, of course. With talented people like David Krentz and Mark Witton involved in the production, the WWD movie’s dinosaurs looked spectacular. The only real issue could be the lack of feathers, which, while faithful to its source material, could be off-putting depending on where you fall on that issue. The detailing, as usual with Papo figures, is tremendous. The most im…

Dodo (Papo)

…eanour. The Safari dodo is an animal all too conscious of its tragedy. The Papo dodo is a bird which struts and oversees Caucus-Races with alacrity. As a figure more reflective of its life appearance, the Safari has the clear advantage. As a toy, however, the Papo dodo comes highly commended by me. I still long for a dodo figure which looks like the one in this Mughal painting attributed to Ustad Mansur (almost certainly painted from life), but I…

Dimorphodon (Papo)

…ook natural. Running your fingers over the arms, you feel nothing but the wings. When this figure was announced, the forum was very divisive on it. Everyone either hated it or loved it. It still has that great Papo detail besides the awful mouth and painted on arms. It’s a great figure if you’re a JW fan or Papo completist. If you don’t fall into that category, look elsewhere like CollectA’s offering….
