Hi everyone, I thought I'd share some pictures of my Pegasus Hobbies Tyrannosaurus Rex I've been working on. I am an experienced model builder, but, I specialize in military aircraft and sci-fi craft. So. This is my first animal or dinosaur model. It is such a different way of building and painting a model so I'm sorry if this is bad  :-[ I know I'm not like one of our local masters that never cease to amaze me with their works of art.

Anyway, the Rex still need some touch-ups and then a wash. The Trike and base are still very early in the paint process. I am disappointed that a lot of the subtle tones are not really showing up in the pictures. Comments and critisms are welcome.

It's really good, especially for your first try :) I like the colour scheme. My only criticism is the teeth. It's better to use ivory and some yellow for the teeth. Dinosaurs wouldn't have been using whiteners on their teeth back then ;)

Dan

Excellent work. Were you inspired by the CM Studios Parasaurolophus for this buildup?

Thanks, the teeth are actually sand color as is the belly portion...it does look white in the pictures  :-\ I'll see if I can find some ivory paint. Thanks :)

@Dan, I think it was...I actually went through a slightly different style with this one and wasn't happy with the tail. I think I did see a Parasaurolophus with that tail and it kinda fell in place.  8)

Thanks for the comments, keep them comming.

:D Beautiful! I like the colour scheme a lot.
Maybe it would look even better if the back's brown and the belly's white would be merged and not marked out.

Simon

Fantastic Dobber,I love it!  Very realistic in my view.  Love the "red head" look.  A little bit of Jack Horner's influence there, I believe.  (I'm thinking of his special "Valley of the Tyrannosaurs" or something like that from about 11 years ago ...

As someone said over on the Clubhouse, if you've got experience painting armor, well, this is not too different - tank-sized camo-animals!

Thanks all, advice is always welcome. You all have great insight and eyes for detail when it comes to dinosaurs. Some times I want to emulate the great works of the big guys, but I also want to be a little different without be too flamboyant. I know, I know, I made a Red headed T-rex doesn't get more common then that anymore! Lol!  :P

@ Postsaurischian, not sure what you mean. Are you referring to the dark brown that outlines the medium brown and the light undersides? If so....I will admit I was torn on that particular look. I saw similar effects in some of my Paleoart books and liked it. Maybe I didn't pull it off as well  :-\

@ Simon, YES! Ever since I saw Horner's special, advertising his scavenger theory, I NEEDED to make a Red headed Tyrannosaur. Now that it is out of my system I can move on as it seems to have become common place! Lol!

I think I know how I'll repaint my Sega Rex next too.....and it will NOT be red headed.  :))

This how I originally painted it. I wasn't happy with it at all.

triceratops83

That's the best painted version I've seen of that model!
In the end it was not guns or bombs that defeated the aliens, but that humblest of all God's creatures... the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Dobber

Wow, thanks!

I'll post more pictures when I have more progress to show.

That is a very delightful improvement over the original! Very detailed and nice scheme for sure. What material are these Pegasus models made of? Are they solid or hollow? They appear pretty high quality.

They're solid vinyl and actually quite heavy. Don't drop it on your foot.

Have you got the adult Triceratops, Dobber?

Wow!  What a wonderful model and a stunning paint job!  Really like it!

@Dan: Are those big guys also in your stock? :)

Sure do, it is built and is also in the EARLY stages of painting. My main problem with it and the little trike that came with the Rex is again deciding on how to paint it. Don't want it too different because it wouldn't look right with the Rex...to me at least. I also don't want colors that are the same as the Rex just in different patterns because then that would just look unimaginative!  :P

Similar but distinct and different is what I'm going for...if that makes any sense.  ???

Arul

Wow thats cool chris  :D that "fire face" !!

Dobber

Thanks ARUL  :)

So here are some updated pictures on the Rex. I gave it a wash to bring out the scales/skin patterns a bit. Pictures were taken in various lighting conditions. The ones where I am holding it really show how the wash looks well, but every time I try to take display pictures the colors wash out...even in the same light conditions!  >:(  Basically, I hate photography!  :P but, if you compare these pictures with the original ones you can see the difference.

Besides a few minor touch-ups and giving the teeth a wash to tone them down a little, as Tyrantqueen pointed out, the Rex is pretty much finished. Now, I'll start working on the baby and adult Triceratops. The base is giving me some problems too. Painting ground is giving me some difficulties  :'(

Thanks for looking.
