The future for Battat

I finally found Stegosaurus, Euoplocephalus and Parasaurolophus yesterday. With all the figures listed on Terra's website released now, it looks like we're running out of clues on what to expect next. I really hope Battat finds ways to continue/expand this collection in Dan LoRusso's absence.

Random thought: you know those "paint it yourself" dinosaur figures you sometimes see in museums and the like? Seeing members here talk about repainting their figures made me think: what if Battat did something like that? They could get extra mileage from Dan LoRusso's sculpts while targeting a slightly different market.
Some accessory playsets like their other Terra sets would be cool.

I just want to see the new sculpts made for sale.

i also found the parasaurolophus, euoplocephalus, and stegosaurus just yesterday! from what i can put together, from digging through dan's old posts and some of the battat threads, is that sixteen of eighteen mos dinosaur repaints had been sent off to battat (we have seen all of them). to date, eight have been released. only the utahraptor and gallimimus were held back, awaiting approval on feathers. my understanding is that dan did was not going to repaint those until he knew whether the old sculpts or the new sculpts would be going into production. as far as the terra line goes, the first series of four had cryolophosaurus, nanshiungosaurus, pachyrhinosaurus, and dacentrus. the second series of four had gigantoraptor, gastonia, europasaurus, and pentaceratops (we have seen all of them). the first two have long been approved and were supposed to come out sometime in 2015. (maybe soon?) the last two have been finished and sent off to battat.  the third series of four had nasutoceratops, plateosaurus, yutyrannus, and majungasaurus (we have seen all of them). the first was finished and sent off to battat. the last three remained incomplete. sadly, it seems that a lot of his time went into doing the mos repaints rather than finishing the original sculpts. it seems that he also had plans for a series four, but i can't find any evidence that it developed beyond a shortlist.

i feel like this line was done just for us and i am so happy to have gotten what we did. i look forward to finding the new ones and it is bittersweet to know that there are only a few more to collect before the collection is truly complete. i really hope that someone picks up where he left off on those last three.

I had a dream the other night that Battat had found a new sculptor, who was now communicating with us on the forum and shared pictures of a brand-new Tyrannosaurus sculpt with with a light creamy paint job.
Naturally a couple of people were already criticizing it.  :))
I guess this has been on my mind more than I realized.

Well I went straight to the source, and emailed Battatco. I specifically asked about the five new sculpts that Dan LoRusso had done - the Gigantoraptor, Gastonia, Europasaurus, Pentaceratops, and Nasutoceratops. Here is their response (I edited out my email address):

Thank you for your email.  We apologize however we will be unable to answer your below questions, as no final decisions have been made regarding new pieces. Keep an eye on terraunvierse.com for new additions in the future, as this will be the first place, with new or old additions.

Thank you.

As expected, the response is non-commital.

Sim

Thanks for that, Daspletodave!  Did you ask about the re-issues too?  I'm not surprised by the non-commital response.  The Euplocephalalus, Parasaurolophus and Stegosaurus are still quite new (I still need to get them), so I wasn't expecting Battat to be about to release some new dinosaurs just yet.

I found this part interesting:
"Keep an eye on terraunvierse.com for new additions in the future, as this will be the first place, with new or old additions."
It seems like "new" is referring to the new sculpts and "old" is referring to the dinosaurs from the MOS line.  It also sounds optimistic!

I agree, this is a very optimistic response from Battat!

At least it indicates that we'll continue to see the rest of the dinosaurs released...eventually. Good enough for me; I will be patient in the meantime.  ^-^

I keep wondering how they're going to fit that Diplodocus into the Target end cap displays. In the box, those will be some dimensions to be reckoned with!

Thanks for looking into that, Daspletodave!

All you lucky ones in the US :( But didn't someone say that they were coming to the UK on the forum? I think it was tyrantqueen but don't take my word for it.

I did. I said there was a possibility. It came from a VERY reliable source. Sorry, can't say more.

I haven't heard anything else since then though.

Hmm, Maybe this summer we will have our shopping basket full... Maybe...

it would be such a pity if Battat would just phase out the whole dinosaur line.
"you know you have a lot of prehistoric figures if you have at least twenty items per page of the prehistoric/dinosaur section on ebay." - anon.

That's a rather disappointing response from Battat. Sounds like they're not particularly enthusiastic about the line. I wonder how well it's selling. We collectors are one thing, but what about your everyday child consumers?

The entire history of the Battat/MOS dino figure line shows that they are indeed "not particularly enthusiastic about the line" and never have been.  They are such a big company and this is such a tiny, tiny piece of what they do.  I do hope they follow up.  I think their figures are selling well at Target - just hope that they have figured out which ones sell the best and will be staggering the production schedules accordingly ... I've seen wayyy too many Pachyrhinosaurs over the past 2 years - a great sculpt but quite predictably, especially given the awkward pose, not the seller that the theropods like TRex are ...

Makes me feel better knowing I have helped sell or purchased more than a hundred of their figures with some help from my parents !!! The better they sell the more likely they continue....

Yeah, all the times I've been to the States and visited a Target, the Pachyrhinosaurus was always among those Battat dinosaurs I found. I blame the mundane colour scheme.

Or perhaps they made more of that figure than others...consider it was the one figure released of the four that was placed in what was termed a "medium" size range. There may also be some other explanation as well....but I can offer you this for insight...anyone looking at the pachys on the shelves and not giving a second glance are missing something, perhaps important to those who collect variations...or maybe not...however I can tell you the orginal run released of the model were in a "larger' box than its contemporaries and there are now versions showing up that utilize the same box size as the smaller models like ceratosaurus and amargasaurus, making it possible they were also packed in runs of the repaints, and repackaged to fit that size case pack. Either way, there are now two variations known to exist in how it was offered packaged. If anyone clamors for a picture I can get you one, as I have mutliples of all versions so far. Or check it for yourself, go back to Target and take the time to look more closely , and you will see just what I am saying for yourself. That may be backwards, in studying it more closely it looks like most of what I have are the smaller size box, and perhaps the new ones were packed to a larger box...thoughts?
