Which Jurassic dinosaurs and prehistoric critters would you like to see in a children's picture book?

Pete's Paleo Petshop is a children's picture book series I am working on, set in a world where people can go to Pete's pet shop to find a prehistoric friend to take home.  Each book in the series will focus on a different period in Earth's history, such as the Silurian, Permian, or Cretaceous.  The first will begin with the Jurassic period, the so-called "golden age" of dinosaurs, because so many classic favorites like "brontosaurus", pterodactylus, and stegosaurus thrived during this time.  Stegosaurus also happens to be a personal favorite.   ^-^

Anyway...I want to represent a diverse range of critters to help kids get a better picture of the diversity of life during this time (i.e.- "pterodactyls" and dinos aren't the only critters running around).  I have my main cast mostly figured out, but I'd love to sneak in a few cameo appearances from other species.

Main Cast

  • Stegosaurus
  • Allosaurus
  • Apatosaurus
  • Diplodocus
  • Brachiosaurus
  • Archaeopteryx
  • Pterodactylus
  • Liopleurodon possibly pliosaurus
  • Ichthyosaurus
  • Plesiosaurus
  • Castarocauda

All these cast members are vanilla, I know, but there are so many misrepresentations of these animals that I would like to tackle the stereotypes of the "vanilla" species before doing anything more "exotic".  Afterall, most books starring your run-of-the-mill pet store would star a tabby cat or siamese, not a sphynx cat.  That said, suggestions of different Jurassic plesiosaurs or pliosaurs are welcome, since I am still considering those.

EDIT Here are some rough sketches of the main cast.  I was mostly just getting a sense of the different shapes I'm working with here.

What Jurassic animals would you like to see?
Please tell me why I should add your suggested species, because that will help me decide which ones to use.
Please limit your suggestions to one species.

Thank you, I will add your suggestions to the list as they come my way.  :)

The Jurassic "extras" I've got so far...

- scutellosaurus
- dryosaurus
- camptosaurus
- ornitholestes
- dilophosaurus
- ceratosaurus
- camarasaurus
- rhamporhynchus
- juramaia sinensis
- leedsichthys

That already sounds like a good, diverse selection, some of which I would have suggested myself if you hadn't already included them. If I were to add anything, it might be a temnospondyl like Gobiops, which would be cool because by the Jurassic they're the last gasps of a group of amphibians that were the largest tetrapods on earth millions of years earlier.
In the kingdom of the blind, better take public transit. Well, in the kingdom of the sighted, too, really--almost everyone is a terrible driver.

Steggy here's been putting on a few pounds.  This little doodle is to give an idea of the sort of feel I'm going for, so it was drawn without reference.  All illustrations in the book will be drawn with as many references to fossil material and other resources as I can.   :)

Excellent! I really like it, and the style seems perfect for a childrens book featuring dinosaurs. I can't wait to see more! I also really like your plesiosaur and Liopleurodon sketches, I can picture the children with scuba goggles lol.

Thank you all very much for your kind words! Gobiops and Metriorhynchus are excellent suggestions.  :)
I shall have to start a new thread with concept art. :D

Darwinopterus perhaps? Or Anurognathus? Or maybe both?

Thanks,

"Just think about it... Ceratopsids were the Late Cretaceous Laramidian equivalent of todays birds of paradise. And then there's Sinoceratops..."
- Someone, somewhere, probably.
