I know there is no skull associated with Haplocanthosaurus remains, but I vaguely recall reading of a skull that was considered putatively Haplocanthosaurus based on provenance and not looking much like anything else...Does anyone know more about this? Or am I making it up?

Maybe this is what you're looking for? The specimen (USNM 5369) consists of the back end of the head and the first couple of cervical vertebrae. It was originally described as Morosaurus, but Charles Gilmore suggested in 1907 that it might belong to Haplocanthosaurus, which seems to have been followed by most subsequent workers: https://repository.si.edu/handle/10088/13958
