Estimates of genetic divergence between animals and fungi, and the antiquity of animal fossils, have long suggested that fungi are ancient. Logically, they have to be roughly the same age as animals. But the oldest fossils were only about 450 million years old. Now, a new primitive fungus is described from microfossils. Meet Ourasphaira giraldae, the oldest known fungus!
