Reexamination of some material referred to microsaur lepospondyls (amphibian-like animals related to amniotes) shows that some are probably composites of multiple taxa. This paper describes a new recumbirostran lepospondyl taxon (Steenerpeton silvae, "[Margaret] Steen's creeping thing of the forest") from one of these composites, separating it from the animal it was jumbled with, Asaphestra platyris, which they propose might be a synapsid, in which case it would be the earliest one known.
