Meet Discokeryx xiezhi.
A new species of prehistoric giraffe has been discovered named Discokeryx xiezhi. It lived about 16.9 million years ago in Miocene China. Like other prehistoric giraffes like Sivatherium and Prolibytherium, it had an unique head ornamentation. It was a helmet-like dome on top of its head, which it used to head-butt rivals or foes. It is literally the mammal equivalent of Pachycephalosaurs. Analysis showed that this dome on top of the skull was rock-solid and could withstand impacts. It is related to modern-day giraffes, okapis and pronghorns.
