It is possible to attach small images to a forum post by uploading them directly. If you do attach an image, there is also a second step to insert the attached image into the post body.

Here are instructions with screenshots to show how to insert an attached image into a post. Inserting the attachment is important because without doing this step the attachment only appears as a tiny thumbnail below the post, which visitors have to click to download and view. Inserting it into the post makes it full-size and removes the thumbnail/download link.

Select (with the cursor) where in the post you want the attached image to appear.
Click the arrrow next to the thumbnail image (circled in red):

This brings up a dialogue box (circled in red). You don't need to add the dimensions, just click the "insert" button:

This will insert the code into the post:

Then you can click "Post" (or "Save" if you are modifying a post as in the above screenshots)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Also, although this option is possible, it is not recommended, because you're better off to use a more reliable dedicated image host, which you're in control of. Attachments are only useful for smaller images  (there is a size limit and you have to manually reduce large images yourself) or posts with just one or two one-off images, which you don't expect to share again, and which might be temporary (if I have to delete them to safe server space).
