Hello.

A few years ago I started collecting dinosaur toys (I prefer to call them models, sounds much more "adult"). My first models were Replica-Saurus at 1:40 scale. Since then, I prefer to buy models made in 1:40 scale. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that prefers figures in that scale.
I decided to start a thread to help the collectors to know which figures in and out the market are in 1:40.
BUT my knowledge in models is very limited, so here's your opportunity to apport your 2 cents. But first please, take your time to read the list.

• If you find wrong information let me know, and I'll correct it.
  
• If you know of other dinosaur models in 1:40 of ANY company, let me know the company, model, status, line and comments (if necessary) and I'll add it to the list.

We can include figures that doesn't state to be 1:40, but actually they are. I mean that you take the measurements, in that case the comments will say "X forum member confirms the 1:40 scale". Please refer to this thread:

The new Battat Dacentrurus is 1/40 but the Collecta figure listed at 1/40 is much bigger.  Also original Carnegie figures originally released as 1/40 are now shown as different scales.  For example Allosaurus 1/35, Amargasaurus 1/35, Ankylosaurus 1/30,  Apatosaurus 1/55, Camarasaurus 1/50, Carnotaurus 1/50, Kronosaurus 1/30, Parasaurolophus 1/50, Quetzalcoatus 1/55, Saltasaurus 1/35, Spinosaurus 1/65, Triceratops 1/45, 25th anniversary Tyrannosaurus rex 1/35.  These figures were taken from the current Safari Ltd collectors guide.
The point is no matter what the company says some figures are just wrong.  Many of the Schleich, Collecta-Procon, Papo figures are not 1/40.   Brontodocus use to have a scale chart somewhere, maybe the old forum where he had figured many of them out.  I don't know where it is but if someone could post it, it would be appreciated.  If someone has a good chart of their own that would be cool also.

The Safari catalogue changes the scales almost every year, I've seen a dinosaur listed as 1:40 one year and then 1:30 the next year and then 1:50 another year.

I'd say the 1:40 scale is a good place to look. Most companies produce figures at 1:40 and 1:35. If you think 1:40s too small I'd go with 1:35, which is starting to show up more. Safari Ltd produces many figures in 1:35. But do note smaller animals are generally brought back at bigger scales. I should tell you this list is a little outdated and some of the scales may be incorrect but I don't know if there's any other threads dedicated to this topic. Hope this helps.

A lot of models marked as 1:40 are closer to 1:35, especially the Battats. The Battat rex for example is 1:35 if scaled to Sue's skull length.

I think 1:35 is a good scale to focus on. 1:40 can be included as slightly smaller than world record size individuals.

I agree with the thoughts and remarks of D @Dinoguy2  -  You don't have to represent the biggest individual of each species. With scale 1:40 / 1:35 you have a large selection of figures to choose from.

In case it helps, I've pasted below a list of the ~1:40 figures in my collection. It includes the genus, the manufacturer, the release year, and the estimated scale. The scale numbers shouldn't be taken to be as precise as this makes them look. As others have alluded to, ancient animals varied more than we'll ever know, and in any case scale estimates will be slightly different if you base the calculation on a skull or a vertebral column or whatever else. But at the very least the below figures would form a coherent display in terms of size, if not in terms of style:
