A series of 257 footprints belonging to Neanderthals has been discovered in Normandy, France. These footprints, which date back to about 80,000 years ago, are part of the largest Neanderthal trackway that has ever been found. The footprints enable researchers to gain direct insight into the workings of Neanderthal social groups for the first time. Analysis of the footprints shows that they were made during a small window of time when the individuals creating them happened to live in the location and that the group consisted of mostly children. Here is an image of one of the footprints and a link to the paper describing the study.
