Bathygnathus borealis was described in 1853 on the basis of a maxilla. Dimetrodon limbatus was described in 1877. The maxilla from Bathygnathus was recognized to be a Dimetrodon, and so should have precedence. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has conserved the name Dimetrodon given the better remains that it represents and its widespread use over the last 140 plus years. Phew!
