Hello there!

I'm been reading DTB more or less frequently for a few years now and thought it would be a good time to get part of the forum.

My name is Pierre (hence the user name), I'm 36 and from Germany, and I work as an archaeologist and documentary assistant in an archaeological excavation company in Augsburg. Dinosaurs have literally been a passion of mine since I can think (together with VW Beetles, turtles and movies), and it was really a hard decision if I wanted to be an archaeologist or a palaeontologist. I don't regret my decision, this way dinosaurs and palaeontology can always stay hobbies of mine, and will probably never annoy me.  ;D

But aside from the biological aspects of the animals, I'm very interested in their cultural impact, the media depicting them, especially movies, ESPECIALLY the very bad ones like the glorious "Carnosaur", and what those animals mean to us as cultural beings. A small dream of mine is writing a book about this topic someday, but since I have so much to do at work, especially for major construction projects (like a flood protextion construction at the Bavarian part of the river Danube or the construction of a high-voltage power line for renewable energies through the whole of Germany), this will be a project for my later years.  ;D

Last but not least, one of my most relaxig hobbies is repainting dinosaur toys, mostly for myself, but often also for my 8 year old nephew. Most of the time they are Schleich figures, since they are the most common dinosaur toys here in Germany, but it's not like I limit myself to those. But some of the figures look really nice after a repaint, since they really have a good detail quality. Although I have to say, of course they would be even better, if they were made with more care for actual palaeontology.

Well, that's all I have to say about myself for now, if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer and I'm looking forward to my time here!

Welcome to the Forum and a warm Hallo from the North of Germany.

:)

" ESPECIALLY the very bad ones like the glorious "Carnosaur", and what those animals mean to us as cultural beings. "

Interesting, since the general view of these Animals changes more with every discovery. Or how Humans see their surroundings and Animals extremely different. Dinosaurs are something special here because of Popculture, and people being used to a specific way or a time Dinosaurs were considered as this and that. Interesting. People humanize Dinosaurs and look for Attributes they think are good and give em "strong" or cute names.

Or the different approach of people that say from themselves, that they love Animals but just want to "have" Animals for their personal good. All this also changes the way we see something. I have the feeling, Dinosaurs als mostly either Killingmonsters or Pets to people. Really interesting.

Those repaints look fantastic, you obviously have some talent! Nice to hear about your professional life too, it must feel good working to help reverse climate change and save the environment. Great to have you on the Forum.

Welcome - you are not alone in combining an interest in archaeology with palaeontology!

Hope you enjoy it here!
And good job on the repaints!

Welcome!

Carnosaur was definitely a "B-Movie" type film with some gratuitous violence an gore but it was still a fun film. I saw it in '93 right after Jurassic Park so I was devouring anything dinosaur related.

Very nice repaints too!

I enjoyed the images of the repaints. I believe that Schleich dinosaurs would offer make good subjects for repainting and even modifications, where applicable.

Hello and welcome to the forum! As to the dinosaurs as cultural constructs I highly recommended W. J. D. Mitchell's "The Last Dinosaur Book" and Alexis Dvorsky's "Dinosaurier! Das sensationellste Buch der Gegenwart".

I am upset with the aggressive "Schleichification" of German toy stores. They do have some nice figures but most of them are crap.

GojiraGuy1954

If you manage to make high-tier Schleich figures look this good I can't imagine how awesome your work would be on a figure that is actually excellent quality as-is
Shrek 4 is an underrated masterpiece

Welcome, Pierre! You've done an admirable job on the repaints, especially given the limitations of the canvas.

Thank you all for all your kind words!

Although my repaints are mostly for relaxation und for my nephew to have dinosaurs no one else has, I'm always striving to get better, especially with more naturalistic colorations. One of the reasons why I mostly paint Schleich is, that they are pretty forgiving, since the models aren't the greatest around, this way mistakes don't look as terrible as, let's say, on the big BOTM-T.rex.  :)) So, thank you again for your kind words, I hope my other works won't disappoint!  ;D

Thank you! I'll try to get those books, just like Richard Fallon's "Reimagining Dinosaurs in Late Victorian and Edwardian Literature", which seems to be VERY interesting. I heard the interview with Fallon on "I know Dino", and it seems to be directly up my alley.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. There are true horrors like their Cryolophosaurus, and some wich would be really nice, if they hadn't chosen so awkward poses, like their Ceratosaurus. And their pseudo monopoly in toy stores is really frustrating.

I'm sorry I can't answer to all of you directly, but I'm very thankful for your kind words and warm welcome here!
