Quote from: triceratops83 on July 06, 2025, 11:54:10 AMI thought it was a pretty lousy Jurassic Park movie, but a pretty good generic dinosaur adventure movie. Jurassic Park movies should have underlying themes, which this doesn't.
I totally agree with this

Hearing the JP theme playing actually caught me off guard because I kept forgetting it was a JP film, LOL,
I did have a good time with it though. This is a film I shall be watching a few times in the future whenever it's available to bring home.

edit: More of my thoughts on the movie are on the previous page

I went and saw JPR. I liked it better than any of the JW movies and probably as much as JP3. But, like was said above, it didn't really feel like a JP/JW movie. It could have been any dinosaur movie and I would have liked it the same.

Using it as a seventh JP sequel made sure people would see it because it is a JP sequel, and for no other reason. If it had a non-JP title, it wouldn't have done as well at the box office IMO.

David Hone is a prominent paleontologist and the author of The Tyrannosaur Chronicles and Uncovering Dinosaur Behaviour. Me, I've considered everything following Jurassic Park and The Lost World to be straight up dreck. And while I haven't seen Rebirth yet, and probably won't until it comes out on streaming, all that I've heard about it thus far leads me to conclude that it's boring and repetitive at best.

Quote from: Dilopho on July 08, 2025, 12:07:45 AMI saw the film today and quite enjoyed it

There's some stuff I didn't like, namely the dinosaurs lacking screentime, the shoddy science, but worst of all for me... the military glazing throughout the whole film

I truly do not understand why Henry is supposed to be a character who vouches for peace, affordable healthcare and such and yet constantly is like "wow, you're military? that's so COOL! Your life is so EXCITING! Wowwww!"

Spoiler
And explicitly tying Zora to Blackwater is weird, Blackwater? The Blackwater that killed innocent civilians IRL in Baghdad, that Blackwater? That feels like such a weird thing to pin onto your character, a real IRL massacre of civilians? And Zora is related to that somehow? I forgot what the exact line was but I thought that was really odd
[close]

You can support the soldiers themselves and universal healthcare. The commanders/political leaders and their decisions on when to intervene? They definitely should be analyzed, and if needed, criticized. Also, Loomis isn't overly happy with the mercenaries:
Spoiler
he is upset that Atwater doesn't mind killing the dinosaurs.
[close]
Further, Zora is supposed to be a bit morally ambiguous at the start of the movie, such as
Spoiler
when she doesn't mind if Atwater kills dinosaurs, she is motivated purely by money, and at first rejects the idea of opensourcing the DNA.
[close]
So the Blackwater connection likely was added to signify she's morally grey. Finally, Gareth Edward's last movie The Creator had a very powerful anti-imperialist message that alludes to Vietnam and Palestine. I highly doubt he's a fan of Blackwater.

I thought the universal healthcare message was nicely done, I'm also surprised since Hollywood seems to be moving away from these messages for the most part.

I saw it. I hated it. Money and time wasted. I have deep regrets.

It doesn't belong to be "Jurassic"
Spoiler
I had no intention to watch but my brother invited me with his friend. Since I had nothing else to do and admittedly, am somewhat a loner, I agreed. Arriving in the theater his friend took pictures of us without my permission, sent it to a group chat and tagging with racial slurs so that kinda killed the excitement of the movie.
I will say, despite the poor writing, I really liked the new animal designs and it was a decent action movie UNTIL the stupid mutant dinosaurs came. But even then only the Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus were good designs, everything else was just slop. Who puts whip-tails on Titanosaurs? Mutadons and the D.rex were so visibly disgusting I actually got made watching it. How did this script even get passed. A 12 year old could design a better concept than this. I miss indominous rex so much now. I swear they make the designs so ugly to spite us. 🤣

The one character who I did like was the teen-boyfriend guy, even if he was just a comic relief trope. All other characters were either bland or annoying tropes (especially that "paleontologist")

Okay, maybe I am overreacting for some dino movie meant to appeal to the masses instead of some niche circle od nerds, but I have that right

I realized the main point of these movies is just to make money selling merchandise, which sounds obvious, no shoot.

I was expecting to have fun, I was not expecting to be impressed.

My only three complaints are that;

It shouldn't have been called Jurassic World, since it tries (and in my opinion succeeds) in differentiating itself from those movies and feels far more tonally consistent and in-line with the first two movies.
Spoiler
In trying to deal with the corner they wrote themselves into with the ending of Dominion they chose to deal with it in frankly the silliest way they possibly could have. When they could have just said that a few dozen dinosaurs escaping in Northern Europe wasn't enough to start new global populations, or that they all got recaptured over time, instead of a bunch of trying too hard jargon that wasn't even good science.

They didn't use their one curse to have someone say "that line" to the xenomorph rex. I don't think they even used their one curse.
[close]

Two of those are basically meta joke complaints and the other is an ultimately fairly minor nitpick that is as much a criticism of the previous film as this one.

And wow, did this movie ever have some fun highlights to it!

Spoiler
Expanding the species roster in some really fun directions with Dunkleosteus, Anurognathus, and megalodon, even if they were cameos.

Every single redesign felt like a bullseye. The new mosasaur, Spinosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, and Tyrannosaurus all looked great, and the JP3-esque raptor was at least neat to see even if it was very brief.

The new non-cameo species were great too, Aquilops was precious, and the new mutants were a ton of fun! Finally some actually freaky looking mutants and hybrids! Do a Chaos Effect series now, clearly the more stylized hybrids work great!
[close]

And topped off with whole selection of really fun set pieces, which is something in particular that put the JW trilogy to absolute shame if you ask me.

Trans rights are human rights.

Now my opinion of this movie...attention: It encludes spoilers.

First I have to say that the CGI-Effects are quite awesome. I loved the scenes with the "real" dinosaurs. It was quite cool, that most of the scenes played by daylight.

The top actors made a good job in my opinion. Especially Mahershala Ali's performance was good. All the actors of the family were annoying.

The script...well...you can't call it that way. There are better fan-scripts out there which would be superior to this garbage.
In my opinion it was a high risk for Universal Pictures to step back from the conclusion of the past JW-Films.
When you have dinosaurs all over the world you can create very different stories based of interaction between humanity, animals and dinosaurs. Even if the Netflix-Series dealed with it a lot you still can create fresh stories which realy feel new.

Well, you now it turns out not to be.

Koepp's writing is a best example of messing around with the source material. The timeline was not displayed right I guess. I am asking you: how much backup islands could you have and stay believable????
And I hate the self quotes. Some scenes especially at the final felt 1:1 coppy pasted from JP.

I hope that mutated/hybrid-dinosaurs will never appear again on the screen. Dinosaurs and JP/W-movies don't need them.

The direction by Edwards was good. His sense for scene-setting, scale and colours made him a ideal choice for the job.
You see this in the scenes with the Spinosaurs, the Tyrannosaurus and the Quetzalcoatlus.

I really liked the Spinosaurus-Scenes! Seeing their sails in nearly every water-scene was so cool and charming. The beach attack on Nina was one of the most realistic hunting-sequernces of the entire franchise. It reminded my on a Grizzlybear cathing Salmons.
I was really disappointed that they didn't appered on the end of the movie again. I wanted to see more of them. There was so much potential of many creative scenes.

The Tyrannosaurus-scene was very horrific and well filmed but quite disappointed that he dind't received a bite.

The deatgh of Leclerc through the Quetzalcoatlus was so realistic and gruesome. Liked it a lot.

The Titanosaurus...well...I guess it was nostalgia. I didn't like them. A generic sauropod crossed with the kaiju Titanosaurus. The result was not attractive to me.

Dolores...well...it should be cute but for me it feeld displaced.

I wished they had a few death-scenes with herbivores against humans. So a spiked mercenary by a Triceratops or Stegosaurus or a crushed one by an Ankylosaurus. Since the Stegos in TLW and Stiggy in JWFK we saw herbivores as giants or as bait or as decorative items.

I realy hate the Mutadons. Seeing the Velociraptor reduced as bait was a slap in the face for the fans. Despite it was fine play with expectations. For me they felt like simple modernisations of the anthropomorphic Dimorphonods or "Mahars" from the movie "At the Earth's Core (1976)". I hope I will never see them again in a new movie.

D-Rex...well...not necessary. Could be replaced by any real dinosaur.

In the end it was an soulless adventure-movie. I would only see it again for the scenes of the Spinosaurus trio (there was so muuuuuuuuch potential), the Tyrannosaurus and the Quetzalcoatlus.

The dolphins at the end should apparently be a quote from the end of JP. 1993 it had been pelicans which guided the Ingen-helicopter with survivers, now the dolphins. Shame on this self-quote!

Conclusion: it was disappointing and I blame the script for it.

Saw the movie a few days ago with friends and thought it was OK. Nothing special, certainly not even close to JP, but good, senseless fun - discussion with my friends afterwards showed that they pretty much felt the same. So we all had fun  ^-^  but it's not a movie that is going to stick with me, and I certainly don't need to see it again. That said, I did go into the movie with the expectation that I'd be presented a very silly, stupid monster movie with bad science, but potentially fun action scenes and monster designs, and that's exactly what I got. If my expectations had been higher than that, I probably would have been disappointed, too.

Perosnally, I found the inclusion of the hybrids unneccesary - I'm not against their inclusion per se, I actually thought the idea of these mutated, hybrid dinosaurs was fun and has potential, but the way they were used in the movie didn't really warrant them being mutants/hybrids imo. Their scenes would have worked just as well with normal dinosaurs; the only thing they really gave was a brief "wtf is that" moment for those in the audience that hadn't seen much of the trailers. A bit of a wasted potential.

JimoAi

The Diddy rex is growing on me and I'm tempted to get the island escape set for it

Gwangi

Thinking more about Rebirth one of the things I liked the most about it that the dinosaurs were mostly presented as animals, not monsters. It's the first film since The Lost World to do that. The irony of it is that the movie has the most monstruous dinosaurs of any in the franchise. And sure enough, the parts with the mutants/hybrids were the least enjoyable to me.

Paleo Flo

You're right with the dinosaurs presented as animals.

Btw...why the title "rebirth"?
Rebirth to what?

100% agree. Thanks that in my case no one wasted any money, only time. I would have regretted to have paid for that.

No, we don't need any more hybrids, aliens or whatever, they have absolutely no sense. The beluga rex was supposed to be scary? - it was not at all.
The only thing I liked about the ¿mutadons? was that they had a throat pouch just like sea turtles. That was an interesting choice - I liked it.

I also liked Scarlett, she's a good actress but the plot was boring and again the same. I was never engaged with the story, just wishing for it to end and continue doing other things. Holes in the script, unbelievable situations ... a very obvious corn field trying to be passed as a grass field ... but the worst design-choice was the titanosaurus (absolutely ridiculous design, again elephant skin, and yes, put tonnes of them in an island! why not! Thanks to this I am even starting to wish the indominus returns ...

But above all, please don't use never ever more again the original Jurassic Park soundtrack in these crap. Please, not. Leave that amazing film alone for once. In Jurassic Park, the soundtrack gave you goosebumps, sped up your heart, gave you chills ... But when you hear in these films, the only thing I think is: oh, again no, please, just throwing it here and there for "some" nostalgic fans, but they don't even know how to create the mood ...

Should I end with the ranking? Ok!

1. Jurassic Park

2. The Lost World

3. Jurassic Park 3 (at least there was more drama)

END. The rest of the franchise doesn't even deserve to be listed behind the first trilogy. But I agree with some of you that at least Rebirth was better than the Locusts film.

Long-time lurker, first time poster weighing in after two viewings at the local theater.

Two-word review: It's ok.

It's a perfectly passable action-adventure blockbuster with a tissue paper plot and stock characters. Like many action films, its answer to most questions and inconsistencies is "don't worry about it look there's a dinosaur on the screen". It's a brainless popcorn flick with a slow first act and some fun setpieces in the back half. If it weren't carrying the Jurassic Park brand name, it'd be an inoffensive flash in the pan - here and gone like a gentle summer rain.

Things I liked: While the writing was about as subtle and nuanced as a brick through a plate glass window, I did appreciate that they knew what they wanted to say and said it clearly. I also loved that they included some little "incidental" animals as cameos. Despite everything, Beluga Rex is very cute to me with its big weird head.

Missed opportunities: For a site that's touted as a sort of "island of misfit toys" for all the oddballs and rejects, there weren't very many oddballs and rejects present. There are plenty of strange looking animals in the fossil record that they could've showcased even in passing (Moschops? Cotylorhynchus? Erythrosuchus, anyone?) and they just... didn't. I feel like they could have had a lot more fun with this premise.

Although my opinions about Rebirth are far more positive I agree that we don't need to hear the original JP soundtrack in these movies. Rather than make me nostalgic it just makes me think of the far superior movie that was Jurassic Park. And they often use it when it's not even appropriate for the scene.

I had a similar feeling the last time I watched Dominion. Malcolm was waving around the burning locust on a stick at the Giga. Naturally, it reminded me of the flair scene in Jurassic Park. But it just felt...wrong. I was having Jurassic Park flashbacks and it actually made me a bit sad.

That's a good take. The incidental cameos were fun and I hope some of the cameo creatures it showed get proper screentime if a sequel ever happens. I completely agree about the Island of Misfit Dinos. Most of these rejected dinosaurs were just normal JP style dinosaurs. Why were they even rejected? This was the perfect opportunity to not only play around with mutations (believable ones) but maybe feature prehistoric animals deemed too unattractive for the park. Could have even had little feathered Velociraptors that were there because some executive decided that they weren't scary enough and pushed for more genetic alterations. Would have preferred that over the Mutodons!

Addition: the whole cure-by-dino-blood-"plot" reminded me of something....this was the kick-off-situation of ",deep blue sea" (1999)

Am I good on not seeing it theaters and catching it on streaming later? Like not something I'd regret? Like I kind of wanted to go for the T. rex river and Spino/Mosa scenes, but if most of it was shown in the trailer anyways, what is the point? I'm getting total mixed receptions from reviews on here and elsewhere. Some think it is one of the best sequels, others despise it, and some just find it meh.

I think it's worth seeing in the theaters. The cinematography and set pieces are its best attributes and best appreciated on the big screen.

Cpt Red 3eard

I saw it again and wanted to share some observations.

The monkeys in the first shots are ober the river where the rex attack happens.

In the New York scene, the school busses are from Crichton middle school.

The TV in the museum shows cartoon versions of later scenes (rex drinking from a river, spinos swimming around, and a titanosaur in a valley)

When you hear that originally the titanosaurs were supposed to mate during their scene, the dialogue therein makes sense as it seems to be setting up for a joke.
