I was always under the impression that "modern" derived birds didn't out-compete pterosaurs as a rule, but specifically in forested canopy niches? I'm not really sure that this challenges that assumption.

Arboreal pterosaurs like Vesperopterylus and tapejarids co-existed with birds for several tens of millions of years so birds didn't replace them there. And this proof extends the period of co-existence even further back
