Is it true that the Rebirth Quetzalcoatlus was originally supposed to be Hatzegopteryx ?

And they kept the design the same but changed the name to Quetzalcoatlus, feeling it was more familiar to people?

I read that online a while back, can't remember where, and didn't get around to asking until now.

I heard it was initially planned to be Thanatosdrakon. I do intend to customize one of the static rebirth quetz figures into a hatzegopteryx since it has the short(er) neck and wider bill hypothesized to be present in that genus.

hm.....Thanatosdrakon i recall reading that too.....i think it was somewhere on this forum.

At any rate my AA Quetz arrived today and i think it's fine the way it is to represent Hatzegopteryx.  Neck on the figure is pretty short and thick....certainly more so than on the earlier Quetz figures and on the real animal, based on current restorations of Quetzalcoatlus, and the skull is rather robust and wide.  I'm not sure any customization is needed to make it a Hatzegopteryx, especially given the scant remains of Hatzegopteryx that have been found.

Just plunk it on the shelf and say 'i dub thee Hatzegopteryx'.  :)

On it's own, absolutely, you totally could do that.
I'm planning on making a Prehistoric Planet Hatzegopteryx specifically though, so a little cutting, sculpting, and painting will be necessary to get the look.

ah...that's a good idea.   I hope you'll post pics of it when finished.   i may give that a shot myself.

i guess you're not planning on repainting the wings though...would be difficult with them being fabric.

crazy8wizard

The fabric wings on the Arial Ambush Quetz could be painted. It's a stiffer, almost canvas-like fabric so it would be possible with the right paint. For this project I was thinking of using one of the basic 12" figures or, if I can get ahold of one, this promo cinemex cup topper figure

ah, i didn't realize there were other rebirth Quetz's available.  Thought it was just AA.
