The Smithsonian didn't acquire the skeleton. It's on extended loan from the Museum of the Rockies. Really extended!

And you'll have several years to plan your trip before it's available to be viewed.

Yes,the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton is on a 50 year loan from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.It won't be viewable to the public until it's mounted in the new renovated fossil halls due to open in 2019 (the current fossil halls will close on the 27th of April this year).
