Does anybody here know the specific names of the prehistoric animals in the sets like the anphibians, mammals and marine reptiles? also does anybody know where any figure in any of these sets is being sold? Also how rare are they and if so why?

SBell

To answer your later questions first:

They are all rare. They were not distributed well (pretty obscure sets for the times they were released, late 90s). Play Visions discontinued them (and many other sets) because they were tired of being bootlegged.

You will never find sets for sale in a store anymore, not as full sets anyway. Sometimes you luck out on ebay in lots of random figures. Or someone here has spares they'll sell. But it's not easy, as most people are not willing to give them up.

As for the sets:

Amphibans:
Crassigyrinus
Platyhystrix
Triadobatrachus
Peltobatrachus
Eogyrinus
Eryops
Gerrothorax
Diplocaulus

Marine Reptiles
Mosasaurus
Elasmosaurus
Shonisaurus
Mixosaurus
Henodus
Placodus
Nothosaurus
Metriorhynchus

Prehistoric Mammals
Andrewsaarchus
Smilodon (although actually based on Homotherium)
Eobasileus
Mammuthus
Ursus spelaeus
Palorchestes
Prorastomus
Megatherium

Of the sets, the amphibian set tends to be the most desired, rarest, and most expensive, as most of the set features animals that are rarely if ever done. Some of the mammals are also never done elsewhere so far, so that set is pretty highly sought after as well. The marine reptile set can be mostly substituted by the Safari Prehistoric Marine Life set (minus a few missing ones). Overall, getting these sets now takes luck or money (sometimes both, and lots thereof--I recall the amphiban set selling for over $200 several years back).

Well, does anybody have any single figures from these sets that they are selling on this forum?

If only I had bought more of those PV amphibian sets when I had the chance...

I was lucky enough to buy the marine reptile series complete on ebay for ~$50 a couple of years ago on ebay, which I believe is a very fair price for the series (if you can even find them in the first place).
The amphibians I purchased from a member of the forum for a very reasonable sum, but I can't remember precisely.
The mammals proved the toughest for me to acquire--I bought a lot of three on ebay once, then purchased two more separately, and then Bokisaurus amazingly helped me to track down the other three. As infamously rare as the amphibians are, I don't think the mammals are much more common.

how much do the PV prehistoric reptiles and modern marine animals cost these days? are they considered rare too?

There is no prehistoric reptile set from PV. They made some dinos, but they are just recasts of commonly available, not very good ones (recently seen in part from Wild Republic). That set was 24 figures, but honestly isn't worth a whole lot due to the poor renderings (and I think it might still be available).

The modern marine mammals are sort of in between--decent figures, but I don't know of any particular value to them. Like the dinosaurs, marine mammals are frequently made as figures, so that might be what keeps them less sought after (although there are some unique ones within the set).

The sharks are similar in value to the cetaceans--again, there are a few really unique ones (angel shark, goblin shark) but otherwise the set contains animals that are produced frequently.

oh so not all PVs per se are sought after/expensive within the collectors market. thanks SBell.

It varies--and varies with the collector as well.
