The Tyrannosaurus looks great!

Thanks ! A few more days of shrinking, some detailing and then the feet. We hope to be ready to paint by March.
Looks amazing, Blade! Can't wait to see the final result.  ;D

I have considered having figures or plushes made of some of our dinos to sell in the gift shop..something more unique. But cost would be a factor...say I invested in 20 pieces all painted ..probably going to make each one cost 30.00 or more each. I don't think most of my customers would buy.  Same for the plushes..I had considered getting Paleoplushies to maybe make us one to sell here..but the cost would be difficult.

You don't necessarily have to buy the pieces outright.  You could offer pieces on consignment, like an art gallery.  The artist sends you the piece, and if it sells, you keep an agreed-upon percentage (50% is standard in galleries); if the piece doesn't sell after an agreed-upon time, you return it to the artist.  No cost to you except shipping.  Just a thought!

Blade. If you go through with it. I would gladly Buy some Official merchandise From your park. I always wanted some of your sculptures as a figure.

Thank you very much.  Consider this an open offer then , if anyone wants to produce anything for our Park on a consignment basis we'll certainly oblige ! Shapeways pieces, plushes, sculptures, just hit me up for any references !

As for myself, we have Backyard Terrors magnets, 1.00 each, will soon have BT's DP magnets.  We also have outdoor quality vinyl decals with our logo on them, the JP-looking one ) for 3.00 and will also be getting postcards in sometime this month I hope.  :)

I'm spit-balling ideas for our upcoming dig site project while I'm sitting here sick with a head cold.

Basically it's a sandbox for the kids to dig in.  However I'm kind of looking to tie an educational element into it..something that's sun but will teach a little.

Here's what we're tossing around so far :

A battle between two different dino skeletons with hints and facts on the walls talking about which species, how they came to be there ( maybe include a turtle shell, some mollusk shells so they fell in the water, drowned in flood waters ? ), all would need to be labeled some how too.

A simplified version of the above with only one dinosaur featured.

Maybe a large wood skeleton kit  buried so they can dig up the pieces and assemble them ?

Any ideas are welcome and appreciated.

I think all of the ideas are good, but I personally like the first one the best; lots of educational value. You could do Al and Stego- two very recognizable Dino's, even for kids. And all the facts would be very interesting.
If the kids are taking things out of the sand and assembling things, it makes it less like a real dig, in my opinion, and more of a mess.  ;D

Our building is roughly 10x10' so full skeletons of those species would be difficult.  I suppose we could use bits and pieces of them though.

I'm hoping to use rubber instead of sand..but it all depends on our budget.

If anyone would also like to write something up to put on a banner feel free to let me know.  I'll post up what I have so far but it doesn't jive too well yet.

Blade-of-the-Moon

Concept art of our newest structure, DIG IT! , our fossil dig site. We will soon be looking for donations to get started on it. Areas will feature a sandbox type structure with buried fossils. So kids can discover clues and figure out what species it is, what it ate and how it died. We are planning for a video to be shown talking about paleontology. There will also be benches for the adults to sit on in the shade.

I'm thinking of a banner/sign that says :

-  Paleontologists put together clues by examining fossil evidence they dig up.
- Use your brush to discover what clues you can find  and put together your own theory about how this animal lived, what it ate and how it died.
-  Now DIG IT!

Pachyrhinosaurus

Wonderful idea! I remember at the Carnegie, there is a similar activity, though neither sand nor rubber were used, but some form of compressed sediment which was similar to the actual ground, so kids really had to work hard to unearth the 'fossils'.

Hmmm..I may have to look into that.  Our local museum here has one that uses the chipped rubber that gave me idea to use it. No harsh grain like sand doesn't get in the eyes and such. It's just expensive..around 10.00 per bag compared to sand around 2.00 a bag.

Would that be the Gray Fossil Museum?  I only got to visit there briefly a few years ago, but it seemed like a neat place.

Yes it is. The Grey Fossil Site and General Shale Museum is pretty cool. Not many dinosaurs but I did get to see SUE at a traveling exhibit there..they also have a Triceratops on loan but it's not very accurate.

Playing " footsy " with a T-Rex..is about as much fun as it sounds.
