Quote from: Blade-of-the-Moon on September 22, 2013, 07:02:21 AMIt is a nice piece even with the incorrect hand position as well. :)

Actually, the hand position is fine AFAICT. Specifically, the hands seem to be folded against the arms & the palms seem to be facing inwards like those of birds (as opposed to downwards like those of bunnies).

Maybe it's just me or the image position, but it looks like the claws point backwards mostly..maybe a bit out to the side ?  Almost like they are rotated too far inward?

I think it's easier to see what I'm saying from this position: http://piclib.nhm.ac.uk/results.asp?image=049426&itemw=4&itemf=0001&itemstep=1&itemx=13

BTW, sorry about modifying my previous comment so many times. I'm just overly critical about my wording.

Maybe..if so it's quite slightly turned inward.  Not to the degree you usually see.

No worries bud ! :)

Rex progress update, a few more teeth still..might add some bumps and such ..not exactly sure where and what extent ..yet.

Somebody might have already asked you, and I'm too lazy to search backwards, but - will you add feathers? Real or simulated?

On the tyrannosaurus ?  No I decided against it for now.  Several reasons pushed me in that direction,  real feathers wouldn't hold up outdoors, the vinyl feathers I make that do hold up seem prone to losing paint when birds poop on them ( a hazard of anything outdoors ) .  It would also be a huge expense of time and labor to coat something this massive with feathers as I hand cut each one.  Last of all there is no 100% definitive proof T-Rex had feathers to any extent..though I did place some on the arms of my juvenile Gorgosaurus..I might do the same here.

Rex update :

I was looking over my Rex yesterday and I think need more jaw connective tissue or something.  The bottom  jaw area in the back looks like it hangs out too far by quite a bit.  Anyone else think so ?

Balaur

I think that the bottom jaw needs a little jaw work too. Nice to see it progress.

Will you be adding feathers on the rex?

Blade-of-the-Moon

I may need to get some more foam and make it quite a bit thicker there.  I do like that it looks quite a bit like the new Safari/Carnegie Rex as far as the head goes.

Nope. Well..maybe some arms feathers ?  There hasn't been any direct evidence found for them yet..and they would be almost impossible to do. I hand cut each feather and one that size would a NIGHTMARE. lol

Whoa!!! Excelente!!!! This is looking really good. Can't wait to see it painted! How big is it?
A fluffy rex is not a scary rex until you see the teeth clamping down on you.

Thanks !

The Rex ?  His head is currently about 5'5" long.  Total length will ballpark 35.5'

How about eyelashes? I figure that'd be both easier & more interesting, speculation-wise.

Hmm.. I can't say I can recall ever seeing eyelashes on a non-anthropomorphized dino before.

Are you intentionally leaving some teeth out on the lower jaw or have they just not been put in yet? Just curious.

Never considered if some modern dinos have them really..might it be a more avian feature ?  Something maybe not developed on their prehistoric relatives ?

I've mostly based my Rex on Stan..he has a few missing teeth and gaps..which would make sense for a living animal I think. No perfect teeth without a mesozoic dentist. lol

Here is a more current pic of the dentition I've done..I think I might need a few more small ones here there though :

After working at the haunt I'm dragging tail..aches and pains, and my throats sore to boot..so I'm not doing a lot of progress right now.. heh

IDK, but that reminds me of the following pic & quote.

Quoting Taylor ( http://svpow.com/2012/06/19/eyelashes-of-the-harvard-museum-of-natural-history/ ):
QuoteIt certainly looks as though these "feathers" are simple unbranched filaments — much like the earliest protofeathers found on so many of those wacky Chinese raptors. I wonder how closely they resemble the ancestral state?

hmm interesting. might be something we have to wait for answer on.

Do any of the dino mummies have them i wonder ?

Your question reminded me of this artwork by Robert Nicholls (one of my fave paleoartists)

I personally don't like the idea that much, especially since it's on a non avian dinosaur...but it's interesting nonetheless.
