Hey everybody.
I've been a lurker on your lovely blog for about a year or so now, and have just now decided to join your ranks upon seeing that the Diorama Contest is going again this year!  Thinking of possibly joining...

Anyway, I've been interested in dinosaurs for as long as I can remember; I think either Mr. Rogers or Fantasia might have introduced me to them?  In any case, I've always loved getting dinosaur figures.  Drawing is another passion of mine, and as you can see, I've often joined these two loves, starting from a very young age, as you can see here, haha.

I'm also a big fan of JP, not sure if that's frowned upon around here?  I saw the first one in theatres when I was 5 years old and it was amazing, haha.  Currently I'm working on getting my hands on the two big Papo Rexes.  ^-^  Most of my dinosaur collection is of JP figures I've obtained, with my Bull T-rex being sort of my "trophy".  I've also got a decent amount of the old Tycos and various Imperials and the like from my childhood.  Typically I'm more interested in whether or not the toy is aesthetically pleasing than completely anatomically correct.  Reading the blog has certainly brought me up to speed on my outdated 90's dino anatomy mindset, though.
Other than that, I'm also somewhat of a gamer, love movies, cooking, and chilling with my husband.  :D

Frowning on JP - I wouldn't dream of it! I suspect you'd be hard pressed to find a single DTF member who doesn't like Jurassic Park!   ;D

Hi Paleona and welcome.
"you know you have a lot of prehistoric figures if you have at least twenty items per page of the prehistoric/dinosaur section on ebay." - anon.

Good to hear~ I just got the impression from the blog that some members might be a bit tired of it's popularity...  :-X

Thanks, though, guys!

It's funny but I got the same impression. I think the general feeling here is that most of us loved the film (and still do), but treat it as such - entertainment. Of course when some of us were kids, we thought "that's what they were really like!" because they were so life-like in the film and the movie really broke ground in terms of getting it out there that dinosaurs weren't just overgrown komodo dragons.

What really gets me about being a member of this forum is seeing everybody else's stuff, then having to fight the urge to spend all your money on some of these replicas/toys. It IS a tease!

Right.  I guess it's just that so many still imagine dinosaurs as they were in JP, and that's what gets to people.  Ah well, it is great entertainment.  ^-^

And yeah!  I was sifting through the collection threads last night, making mental notes of figures I'd like to buy.  Makes me feel like I've got some catching up to do, haha.

Welcome! I loved the first JP movie, and still do--but what I (and I think many other members) don't like, is that it is almost 20 years later, and many (most?) companies are STILL using Jurassic Park as a primary source of reference when producing dinosaur-themed merchandise. Its getting very, very old. Safari/Carnegie and Collecta are the only non-Japanese toy companies I can think of at the moment that are actually trying to make their models scientifically accurate based on 21st century standards.

My living room smells like old plastic dinosaur toys... Better than air freshener!

As exaggerated as some aspects of JP science are, I'm still grateful that they put to rest the tail-dragging, the swamp wading, the recharging in the sun, the fully upright posture of Tyrannosaurs view of dinosaurs.

What irks me most about co.'s using JP as a reference is producing Deinonychus figures and labeling them "Velociraptor".

I adore Jurassic Park, as I've stated elsewhere. I even love their raptors, though they are terribly outdated (again, a twenty-year old movie, what else could be expected?). The thing that bugs me is the hesitancy of companies to deviate from that scaly old design due to its wild popularity. Even Safari, arguably the most apt to release up-to-date figures, has a scale-covered, goblin-handed Velociraptor. Do they really think an accurate, birdlike raptor wouldn't sell? I'd buy a crate of 'em and hand them out to friends.  ;D
