A new study by researchers from CENIEH suggests that the teeth of the Tongzi hominids from Southern China, typically believed to belong to Homo erectus do not fit the typical morphological pattern for this species. Instead, the researchers suggest that the teeth could belong to Denisovans. The study also suggests that two human populations existed in East Asia during this period (Homo erectus and Denisovan). The study suggests that more genetic and fossil discoveries are necessary in order to confirm Denisovan ancestry. Here is an image of the Tongzi teeth and a link to the paper describing this study.
