Impact of the Coronavirus and Self-Isolation

I'm not going to go on a lengthy diatribe here, but I think the pandemic has exposed just how awful a vast chunk of humanity is. The ignorance, the denial, and the sheer selfishness sicken and anger me to no end. How many lives could have been spared if only everyone had properly embraced or at least accepted the concept of the greater good? And how many more lives will be most lost even when a successful vaccine is distributed, because plenty of deluded anti-vaxxers will refuse to get it?

The mind boggles and the heart mourns.

A customer at my workplace today was shouting to anyone who would make eye contact with him that the store was pushing propaganda. I didn't ask him to elaborate, but based on previous experience I presume he was upset because we "require" customers to wear masks (I use quotes because we are not permitted to make any attempt at enforcement). He notably was not wearing a mask himself. Such people regularly equate being asked to take the slightest precaution with living under the tyranny of Hitler or Stalin. I have been called many slurs by them, simply for being present and wearing a mask. Meanwhile, the infection rate and death toll continue to rise. Ugh.

I work at a place for those with disabilitys, and im one of those with Disabilitys(Are any of you shocked?). , I have to ride a bus three times a week to get to work and back where they require a mask to bourd it. At work, I can be Shreadding Documents  and Bailing Used Cloths in the mouring, and sort beverage bottles and Cans in the afternoon. On Fridays, I help someone pick up documents and recyclybles on a Truck. We have to where Blue Surgical masks at all times, though with the numbers riseing in our countys, i wont be surprised that i would be out of a job for qhite a while.

However, on the weekends, we go grocery shopping on one day only. And we are a family who takes this serieusly, by whereing a masks at all times in the store, and we often get stares by those who dont whare them, as if we were (as my mom put it) "Wusses For Beleiveing this Crap".

I often wonder Why the store we frequent no longer ENFORCES Masks, But a wise woman who works with me told me its due to another problem in this nation involving guns.

I{ said enough :-X

Thanks for all the well wishes folks. Tried calling the doctor's office today to get something set up for me to get tested, but they never returned the call. Will try again tomorrow. My mother's result finally came back positive last night. No surprise here really.

I would not be surprised in the least if my father caught it from one of the numerous anti maskers that come into his store (which had to be closed to get cleaned after he tested positive), if not my brother from his workplace, for those employees he works with that refuse to wear one, especially with cases on the rise in our area. To be honest I'm surprised we lasted this long before ending up with it because of just how many of those folks that are in our area, that have no concern if they spread it or not, and in turn jeopardizing people's health (such as my parents), and financial situations as well.

@Lanthamotus avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi Hopefully you guys don't have or catch this. I am hoping for the best of everyone here. And for those that also experienced it hopefully you all had swift recoveries.

I'm so sorry, avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin I hope your household gets well soon. I assume you'll all at least get to quarantine together so that you're able to help each other get better. Hopefully you can get your test soon.

avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin I'm sorry about what your mother is going through and the problems your father and his store have when it comes to dealing with the problems of the coronavirus. I hope your problems are solved as soon as possible. My absolute support.

Just getting caught up on this thread and I guess I shouldn't be shocked that members here on the forum are being affected. It both saddens and angers me since the common thread seems to be the people affected are the ones who were doing the right thing. My wife and I have been wearing masks and gloves well before our stupid government finally told people to wear masks and I have only gone out for necessities since my wife suffers from mild asthma. Canada did well in the first wave but our numbers are climbing and I see idiots of all ages still going around without masks. The fact that masks protect the other person more than the wearer tells you something about their priorities. We have had two cases in our extended family a woman in her 90s out west in Canada who fought it and recovered in a long term care home and now a child of one of my nephews in the US has just come down with it. I pray for him as well as you avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin and avatar_Gothmog the Baryonyx @Gothmog the Baryonyx and anyone else who has been affected here on the forum. Everyone else who refuses to wear a mask to protect others not so much.

I just dropped out of school for next semester because of the virus. I will now be graduating a semester late. i think that is ok though. I did not think the education I was getting was sufficient during the virus.

avatar_Doug Watson @Doug Watson Best wishes to your two family members for their complete restoration. Honestly, there are deniers and at the same time foolish people throughout the world regarding the coronavirus who put the most valuable interests such as the health and lives of people before insignificant interests and put their lives and the lives of others at risk . Completely agree with you.

Protect yourself and your wife there is no more important value in this life by far as life is. It is a gift from God.

I just learned that my aunt and uncle in California are both positive. They both have lots of health issues already, so I'm pretty worried for them. Also two of my good friends (both teachers) and two of their four children are positive as well, but they seem to be having only mild symptoms so far.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that those vaccines roll out quickly and work as well as advertised.

avatar_Primeval12 @Primeval12 - that stinks to have to change your plans like that. I hope all works out well for you.

ceratopsian

We had an alarm yesterday, as the neighbour who drops off groceries to my father (in his late 80s) contacted him to say she had had a positive test.  Turned out to be a false alarm - more tests had been taken (she works as a carer) and they were negative.  Given my father's great age, we were very worried.

Shonisaurus

avatar_Newt @Newt Best wishes for recovery to your uncles and the same for your friends and their children, my best wishes for their speedy recovery.

avatar_ceratopsian @ceratopsian I'm glad it was a false alarm and take care of your father. Parents are a treasure to be cared for and loving are a gift from Heaven. My best wishes.

I hope your household gets well soon.Previously, it was reported that antibodies in the blood of the cured would be used for treatment. Once it appears in China, the entire region will be quarantined, examined and treated.

I just dropped out of school for next semester because of the virus. I will now be graduating a semester late. i think that is ok though. I did not think the education I was getting was sufficient during the virus.

I've been teaching online and several of my students withdrew or just stopped participating--you're right that it's not at all the same. I teach lab courses, too, so almost the entire experiential aspect is gone. I masked up and went in to campus twice to film dissections for my students, but it's a very weak substitute. There's also a central perversity in the costs--students justifiably feel that they shouldn't have to pay full tuition for online courses, but the costs of delivering content online are actually greater than the costs of teaching in-person, when you factor in the fixed costs that universities have (building maintenance, for example). I don't know how to square that, but hopefully we won't have to live with that mismatch much longer.

We have opened the third "extra" ICU in my hospital, but fortunately there has not been such a rise as big as in March-April was in patients who need ICU. So now we can manage the situation. By now.
We have opened doors to all media (radio, TV and publicity) and about 30 university students were invited to take a look inside (well protected and supervised) so they can tell other youngsters and students that this all is true and not something that some don't believe. And that a young person, with no previous medical issues can end in the ICU.

I want to share with you one of the two videos that were recorded in our ICU for a campaign of the Basque Goverment to prevent COVID-19:

It's a real patient, no actors, no actresses. I work there and those are my workmates.

And one of the two posters of the campaign. Another of our patients:

The message is very clear:
HANDS - MASK - DISTANCE
All know how to avoid it

Thanks for posting, Duna. Sometimes a video of a single case can do more to convince people of the gravity of things than mountains of statistics can.

Well my results came back today and they were positive as expected. I am largely feeling fine at this point. My parents are still dealing with bad coughing (including coughing up bloody mucous), particularly my dad. Hoping he can get looked at tomorrow. Now from what I was told by my doctor's office, I have to quarantine for minimum 10 days after I was tested, so long as I have no serious symptoms in the mean time (such as fever).

I've also been trying to care for my dad who is having the roughest time with this. I've been sharing with him my vitamin D tablets, and doing tasks for him to help him conserve his energy to fight this.
