Back at it again with model history, this time actually featuring the Sanrio Kaiju molds that include the Stampals Hadrosaurus rather than the K&M Minis themselves.

This guy looks familiar, doesn't he? He's a hard plastic cracker jack from the 70's, which lines him up quite neatly with Stampals. What is of more interest is his buddy!

This guy doesn't line up with any known Sanrio or K&M mold. The plot thickens- there may be a secret, non-stampals line which includes the original molds of some of our beloved K&M minis!

Hey, this is a real interesting data point, though! This is the exact same mini set as the 2000 release from Instagram that you posted- it appears that they did not change which dinosaurs came in which sets during the entire run. Which makes it a little odd that I somehow had a set of eight (tylosaurus (lost in a move), protoceratops (lost to the vacuum), dimetrodon, smilodon, pteranodon, brachiosaurus, palaeoscincus, and t-rex) that does not correspond to the sets sold.

Also, second data point- Ankylosaurus, Cynognathus, Diatryma, Ichthyosaurus, Iguanodon, Kentrosaurus, Parasaurolophus, and the Wooly Mammoth don't show up in either set. Taking a guess based on the two you originally had in your possession, I suspect that's our final set of eight.

Polacanthus. Polacanthus, not Kentrosaurus, is included in the final set of eight. Good grief, I was not on top of it last week.

(Also, mystery solved that didn't need solving: my brother had the other eight from the previous two sets, and proceeded to lose them in Lake Superior. Anyone here want to do some diving?)

Quote from: tinyvinyldinos on July 26, 2022, 07:48:59 PMAfter some historical research (bothering ebay sellers and their contacts), I return with some history of the molds.

Ankylosaurus, Brontosaurus, Cynognathus, Hadrosaurus, Iguanodon, Parasaurolophus, Polacanthus, Pteranodon, and Stegosaurus all started out as STAMPALS molds. Dimetrodon and Triceratops are very close to the original STAMPALS molds as well, but were bent slightly (for reasons unknown to me). The final STAMPALS mold, Protoceratops, bears no real resemblance to the K&M Minis Protoceratops. STAMPALS are not painted, and are made of harder plastic than the K&M Prehistoric Minis. The molds-with-stamps appear time-to-time as various hard plastic stamps by various party favor places. Interestingly, there are two of the STAMPALS that show up as part of the kaiju molds that oriental trading company sells as dinosaur eggs- Hadrosaurus again, and the original STAMPALS Protoceratops.

From the K&M lot, there seems to be molded-but-unpainted lots that show up in warehouses from time to time. I've confirmed with the sellers that they're the same material as the K&M stuff. Interestingly, of the ones I've seen, Ichthyosaurus (sorry Reuben) and Tylosaurus are never present. That raises questions, but neither I nor the ebay sellers have had answers to them. K&M International has not responded to my emails asking if the sets of eight were consistent throughout the run, nor why they chose which molds for which sets of eight. That being said, my set of eight was Brachiosaurus, Dimetrodon, Palaeoscincus, Polacanthus, Protoceratops, Pteranodon, Smilodon, and Tylosaurus, whereas the instagram post depicts a different set of eight.

Post-K&M (sort of, as K&M sold these themselves for a while), we see Ankylosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Dimetrodon, Hadrosaurus, Igunaodon, Pachycephalosaurus, Palaeoscincus, Parasaurolophus, Polacanthus, Steogaurus, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus appear as jetballs. This holds true today, with various companies selling these molds in jetballs or jet eggs- but, interestingly, never outside of them. K&M International has not responded to my emails asking why these particular figures of their line-up were chosen for the jetballs.

This leads us to the enigma of microllector (who also has not responded to me). They're clearly recasts of varying quality, they look like they might be eraser rubber or maybe silicone, and they include every mold of the K&M figurines except the oldest and most common, Hadrosaurus. Were these actually being sold by a company? Were they pirated? What's up with that?

Anyways, this concludes a brief history of K&M Prehistoric Minis and the molds they arose from. Back to scouring Ebay.
New Stampals information courtesy of an eBay seller! Stampals continued on into the 90's with differing materials, but apparently the same molds. It looks like K&M bought the Stampals molds and utilized them for the Wild Republic Dinosaur Adventures Prehistoric Minis line, and then retained some for the jetballs and sold the rest. It continues to be unclear as to whether the non-Stampals molds started life somewhere else or were created by K&M for this purpose. I am beginning to suspect Ichthyosaurus and Tylosaurus as being K&M-exclusives, as they never appear in the unpainted lots, which would make sense if the manufacturers were being allowed to sell unused stock except for K&M proprietary molds.

And, thanks to Profnik, we've confirmed that the sets of eight were consistent throughout all runs!

 :D Your very welcome tinyvingldino

:D Good thing I found these 2 woolly mammoth 🦣 is my favorite 2nd one 🥈an gastornis that found it 3 years ago on Etsy after I lose these 2 for 22 years ago.

Hey, congratulations! Seems like you managed to get your hands on a suitcase, too!

(Would you be willing to duplicate any of your current minis? I know Reuben's looking for that ichthyosaurus, and I'm hunting for protoceratops as well as the mosasaurus myself.)

Found something interesting today!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/405014474324

This is definitely the K&M Cynognathus mold, but it's been painted in very different colors (look at those red eyes!) and it's in a jetball, neither of which are consistent with the K&M Cynognathus set. I've sent the seller a message with some questions, and we'll see if we learn anything new

(By the way, Profnik, if you have any further information on those lakeshore counting dinosaurs, I'd like to know so I can work out the history and timeline of the molds. The STAMPALS appear to originate from the 1980's, and in the late 90's the molds were used for K&M, and then some of the molds were used for jetballs, and the rights to those were sold. The history currently implies that certain molds, like Tylosaurus and Ichthyosaurus, were created and limited to K&M use, but I would have put smilodon and gastrornis there as well. Also if you have a spare protoceratops...)

tinyvinyldinos

Definitely a K&M Cynognathus! As a side note, I'm beginning to suspect that some of the jetball minis are smaller than their counterparts- here's a comparison of smilodon and stegosaurus- smilodon's original, stegosaurus is from the jetball, and eyeballing the toyanimalwiki photos suggests that  stegosaurus' should have spines taller than smilodon's back, and jetball stegosaurus does not really do that.

On the other hand, I got my horrible hands on some stampals, and they're definitely similar but larger.

Now, I was told that the stampals were less pliable material than the K&M minis, and that is NOT true. I think the materials are the same, since they still have a little give in the same ways and places as the minis do. They are pretty dang similar to the minis in most respects.

This looks like a band of kids in some way, and I don't know how. Like, they are too cute, and they are just toys. Daaamn

If you have a guide to making molds, my hands are never going to be steady enough to paint anything, but I have the wooly rhino, elasmosaurus, and parasaurolophus that I'd be willing to try and make molds of to send to you. I only exclude the pteranodon in my collection because his paint is peeling something fierce, and I'd be worried about casting him with that in mind. Imagine if I cast him and then he peeled out of the mold naked!

i have seen ebay listings that had pictures of the tylosaur in bouncy balls, in uniform vibrant orange, however the pictures were misleading as they did not stock that particular ball. sucks, but the tylosaur was made into a bouncy ball from what i can tell
